Adventures with Waffles

My daughter and I read this book for her homeschool little ladies tea book club and we laughed, we cried, and laughed some more! This book was so good we couldn’t put it down. She’s 10. It’s full of life lessons about friendship, family, loss through death and a little bit of Jesus. Highly recommend as a read aloud for families with kids ages 6-13!

This book is a fun read for children even those no longer in childhood. I enjoyed every chapter and word!

This is a well-written, hilarious book that hits you right in the heart. Such a precious story. I read it aloud to my 9-year-old son and we both loved it.

This is a heartfelt little book full of humor that had us laughing out loud and rereading passages for fun mixed with deeply moving emotions of love and loss and family and friendship. At times it reminded us of a more modern day Heidi (a similar setting with beloved characters, both adult and child, who are full of personality and shenanigans). This is an imaginative, delightful, and simple read -- my five year old loved it and my tweens did too! There's a little bit of Jesus and heaven and church woven in. Originally written in Norwegian, this book has traveled the world winning many awards and has been translated into 20 different languages. We will be having a waffle bar for dinner this weekend to celebrate this memorable read-aloud!

Wow! I have never enjoyed a book as much as this before. It seemed almost every page of dialogue was just a child’s adventure dialogue of genuine thoughts on life as a child. It is like you’re there and seeing all the fun things the characters get into and there are times you laugh and cry as other reviewers have mentioned. It is such a short book, but each page holds a chuckle because of the candid perspective of the main character’s happenings. I will say, I don’t buy books very often. We read this as a part of Sarah McKenzie’s book club and got it from the library. We HAD to keep it! So we bought it here and tried to think of anyone else our family could share it with. The only sad thing is that it’s new, so not enough people have heard of it and we had to wait a while to get it from an interlibrary loan to boot! Can’t say enough fun things about this book!

Adventures with Waffles ranks one ranks highly as one of the most delightful middle grade books I've ever read, and definitely the best that I've read in a long time. It is laugh-out-loud funny, poignant, and sweet all at once. Young Trille is a genuine, observant and warm narrator, and his adventures with Lena, the girl from next door, made me laugh and cry at every turn. A satisfying, well-written and funny read.

Read this aloud with my kids ages 6-18. Some themes were a little heavy for my 6 yr olds but were handled lightly. I think my 12 yr old and myself enjoyed it most. There is humor and bittersweet tears. Sweet story with a satisfying ending.

Fantastic book for kids 5-10 years of age. Exposes your children to life in a small town in Norway, and the many adventures and friendships that resist there. I (37 years old) laughed and cried and enjoyed it immensely. My 9 year old can’t wait to read it again.

Our whole family LOVED this book. The hilarious antics, real-life drama and dilemmas and the cultural aspects hidden away in this book make it a keeper and it will be re-read. Mom laughed so hard at times she could barely breathe or was crying from laughing so hard and all our kids, aged 4-14 loved this read-aloud. As a homeschooling family we’re picky with our books and with what is worth our time, and we love us a good classic. But this one..? A true, wholesome, modern-day keeper.

Both my 7 year old son and I loved reading this book! We laughed and cried. Beautifully written with a timeless message. I would end a chapter and my son would beg me for me. I think we will read it again and again. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend.
