Got manga? Christopher Hart’s got manga, and he wants to share it with all his millions of readers—especially the beginners. With Manga for the Beginner , anyone who can hold a pencil can start drawing great manga characters right away. Using his signature step-by-step style, Hart shows how to draw the basic manga head and body, eyes, bodies, fashion, and more. Then he goes way beyond most beginner titles, exploring dynamic action poses, special effects, light and shading, perspective, popular manga types such as animals, anthros, and shoujo and shounen characters. By the end of this big book, the new artist is ready to draw dramatic story sequences full of movement and life. Review: Impressive resource. For beginners and more advanced illustrators - A big fan here of Manga and just about all of the Japanese styles of art. I watch several shows regularly from Full Metal Alchemist to Bleach. When I was younger I watched tons of _Anime_ programs too. So, its been a dream of mine to draw Manga in some form or another for quite some time. When I bought this book I was unsure how it would be helpful. On my own drawing Manga has been less than successful. With this book I have improved my faces, bodies and hair more than I could have through practice alone. The book covers the basics all the way up to perspectives in scenes and more. If you are even a little bit interested in drawing manga and like self help books then this book should not be passed up. It is a true treasure for the beginner up to the more advanced illustrator. Accessories: If you are going to be drawing on a tablet on your PC I recommend Manga Studio EX 4 (Win/Mac) for software and Wacom Intuos4 Medium Pen Tablet for the tablet. Don't bother with the Debut program of Manga Studio if you think you are going to get into this at all. I use Manga Studio to draw all of my line art sketches and illustrations. If you are going to be drawing on paper, do yourself a favor and go to a real art store. Get good paper, HB or harder pencils and a VERY good eraser. Also get a set of .01 up to 1.0 pens. It will help you with your illustration. Thats it, good luck with this great art form! Thanks for reading my review. Review: Great Tips - I got this book to help with starting to learn how to draw. It has some great suggestions and tips on how to draw, and is easily explained to a beginner like myself. Would recommend to anyone wanting to start out!

The Name Says It All!!
Well my title says it all as well! This book is exactly what most people need to start drawing manga right away. Starting with the most basic of all things, character design! The book consists of a lot of different tips and guidance on how to draw characters. starting from the front view, the profile to the 3/4 views of the characters face, body and poses. It also has the basic tips and instructions on drawing weapons and clothes. Just when you thought you are done by mastering those basics, the book teaches something more in a form of drawing animals, anthropods, shading ,colouring and drawing backgrounds! The tips on drawing from perspective is in fact, in my opinion, a very useful tip for any artist in particular. Overall, the book has everything the beginner needs to learn to start drawing right away! but, advanced or even intermediate artists may find this book a bit lacking, but why buy a book for beginners when you are higher in skill level in the first place?

It has almost everything...except for heads
It's a great book for drawing bodies as it shows you where all the joints are in both male and female mannequins. It also shows different orientations and has lots of good tips for beginning manga artists to make their manga look more professional. In a lot of the book it's obvious that the art was done by different people; that may be a plus or a minus as you can see a few of the different ways to draw manga. The book is really lacking in terms of how to draw heads. Mark Crilley's Mastering Manga does an insanely better job at it. One issue I ave with this book is that it shows you how to DRAW manga, but it seriously lacks on how to write it, unlike Impact Studio's obscure book-that-I-can't-remember-the-name-of. Overall, though, I'd definitely recommend it. Also, it struggles in terms of proportions and how many heads tall people are. You get a bit of that in MM.

Ecstatic grandchildren & grandmother
i shop Amazon for my granddchildren who live 300 miles away and who are now 13, 10 & 6. their mother creates a "wish list" on Amazon for each child and that's how i learned of this wonderful service for grannies who don't see their precious ones daily or weekly. Phoebe was truly ecstatic with all of the Manga products i bought, as well as Henry's pleasure & delight with the Xtrasaurus (or whatever those things are called), and my 13 year old Phoebe was THRILLED as only a 13 year old girl can be with the Stylus Mouse Pad. of course, i am clueless about all these items, but the point is the children were happy, entertained, and joyous the several days we were together. thank you Amazon. (i tell all my friends with out-of-town grandchilren about this service.) must say, we live in Texas, 50 miles South of Austin, Texas, and my husband is a Texas ex, so "HOOK 'EM HORNS!", stem the Crimson Tide and win another Crystal Trophy!! Tonight is the night! Rose Bowl will rock. linda blevins

Perfect for Beginners
I've been looking for a long time for a great drawing book for anime/manga, so I could improve my skills. I saw this at Barnes and Noble, skimmed through it and loved every page! Unfortunately, it was out of my budget, but when I saw it on Amazon at less than half the price, I snagged it up! It was clear instructions on many subjects from angles of the face, to different eye shapes, to fashion for male and female characters. Even the art was great! Some manga art books have really crappy drawings inside of them, which is always disappointing. I highly recommend this book to any beginner who is looking for a book to start their anime/manga drawing collection!

From a teenage Anime lover : I think it's great!
I just got this book today, and I was SO excited. I'm fairly good at drawing realism, but when it came to drawing anime...well....I stunk. I have watched several animes, and I know the style pretty well, but no matter how hard I tried I could not transfer that style onto paper. Within the first few practice sketches using the directions from this book, I came up with an awesome drawing. I read in a review that it wasn't good because it didn't answer a lot of the reader's questions. In my opinion, only an intermediate anime artist would have those questions. For beginners like me who simply want to know where the eye placements should be, or where the nose should go, this book is perfect. It also goes into detail on different eye styles, hair styles, and it even has a few clothing/costume ideas for different anime character types. All in all, it's a great book and I can't wait to use it more!

Great for Beginners!
i did my research and I finally picked this one this book for my little brother who is getting into drawing manga and he is beginner. So i wanted a book that was going to help him learn how to draw manga without confusing him or just having pictures and no words. This book has amazing information and tips on how to draw manga. The book is beautifully made and the pictures are gorgeous, that they have for examples. And the examples that they have in the book were very nicely put together. I would recommend this product to anyone who is a very beginner on drawing manga. Its differently worth the money. :)

You get what you see, and more. Gives important pointers and thus makes it easy to draw the manga characters and at the same time goes beyond just drawing simple characters, also shows how to give a personality to your OCs. Would highly recommend.

Christopher Hart, thank you, so very much
I love your books on how to draw manga as a beginner and from a fresh take of it. Just neat and stylish characters, all the while you give step by step builds on the process and construction of the character type and starting from breaking down to the very basics, you take us learners and guide us with examples that are simple enough to follow, I plan to buy each of your books.. I love your approach, your thinking of not just making a plain how to book but you have managed or surpassed even books that animation college instructors made, that were not nearly as large and filled with study guides from each part of manga characters, to them in perspective and animals, even to making our own comics which I didn't expect to find in the book. You have made a study guide 3 or 4 times larger, not just in thickness but in overall size of book. My background and storyboard teacher made a book that was no smaller, yet no larger than pretty much a handbook and possibly less than half the thickness of this book. This was beyond well worth $12.53 as far as I'm concerned, I would have payed more in the city that I live. Around here books half this size cost $17.00 to $20.00. You have an admirable degree of professionalism in your work. Thank you for this, I've been wanting to practice and learn manga, anime along with any other types that I can find new inspiration with.
