Very good sharpener as a Bostitch should be, hence the higher price than a no name brand cheap one.

We bought this sharpener 3 years ago. I agree with most of other reviewers comments regarding sharpener receptacle being too small, especially the amount of pencils my kids go through. But, it is quiet, sharpens quickly and works well. However, in the last 6 months, it's been finicky. The sharpener's motor won't start unless you wiggle or lean the pencil at a certain angle. We made do with it, but it was a frustrating process. Finally, it started to make a loud noise and wouldn't sharpen the pencil fully. I finally looked into the warranty and it has a 7-year limit warranty. I went on their website and submitted a claim via email http://bostitchoffice.com/support/WarrantyClaimsForm_SaleReceipt_20140130.pdf. Claim was emailed on Monday, I received a new replacement sharpener on Friday! Wow...I say that's great customer service. So, if you are having or have had issues with this sharpener, don't throw it away! Submit a claim if you have had it for less than 7 years!

I have purchased about 5 sharpeners in the last 4 years I have been a teacher. I have spent anywhere from $20 - $70 on some type of electric sharpener, just to be frustrated and disappointed. Well, after using this sharpener I was absolutely giddy and went on a sharpening marathon. I will agree that the biggest con with the sharpener is the small compartment for the shavings. You can only sharpen about 8 pencils before needing to empty the compartment. However, the pencils sharpen so quickly and perfectly that I am currently unable to complain about having to empty it so many times. I was so thrilled with this sharpener that I have sharpened over 200 pencils, just in one day. After about 75 pencils you will need to allow it to cool down for about 10-15 minutes but after that you are good to go. My next test is to see its true life durability. If I get a school year out of it ( and it maintains its efficiency), I would still feel that I have got my monies worth and will definitely purchase a new one for the next school year.

I have wasted so much money trying to find the best pencil sharpener and I found it. Bostitch is the best on the market . The point is so sharp and the cut is so even all the way around the pencil. I am 100% satisfied with this product and highly recommend it for it's superiority.

I have two of these. One in my classroom and one at home in my office. I love it. The top sharpener is great, because you only have to use one hand to sharpen a pencil. With front sharpeners, you have to use one hand to hold them in place and another to sharpen the pencil (otherwise you push the sharpener away). This one is very fast and automatically slows when the pencil is sharpened. Very easy to empty although it doesn't hold a ton of shavings. I love that you can see if the container is full. I would obviously purchase this again.

I was very disappointed after trying to use my new sharpener from Bostitch, mostly as this is the first product I will need to return after all the years I've shopped at Amazon. As some of the other reviews have said sometimes it worked only after trying many times or positioning it just right or whatever. Just emailed Bostitch for warranty replacement and hope the next time I can join the ones here giving the 5 star reviews. This is an ammendment to the above:I've just found out how to make it work consistently and sent them a follow-up email to forget the return. the solution is much less cheaper/hassel-free.It's now working so I've modified my review/ratings. Still, a consumer shouldn't have to go through this so it is not a 5 star rating. What I did was take a chip off an eraser and slide it into the space where the protrusion goes in and when I remove the tray the safety switch is no longer depressed so it still activates.

Bought this sharpener in 2012, over 7 years ago. It no longer sharpens pencils to a fine point, but it was well worth the purchase for working like a heavy duty sharpener and lasting this long. Decided to buy a different brand for $20, and just tried it this morning. It apparently has a much weaker motor - sharpens in only 1/2 second spurts, not continuously until either released or reaching a sharp point. Now planning to return the new one and will probably re-purchase this Bostitch again.

Pros: It gets regular pencil sharp and pointy. Looks decent on the desk and doesn't take up a lot of space. Despite having a much smaller container for the pencil shreds than it actually looks like it ought to have, there is plenty of space that you don't have to empty it that often.Cons: It doesn't like colored pencils at all or any kind of pencil that has a thick or hard outer casing. When inserting the pencil into sharpener, any excessive pressure will cause the darn thing to just seize up requiring you to pull the pencil out and then reinsert to try again. This is true for almost any sharpener though, except this one does it ALL the time for any pencil other than a regular #2 which leads me to believe that it doesn't like these other pencils with 'harder skin'.To make this thing work at all, you have to feed the pencil down very very slowly and balance how much pressure you are exerting vs how much pencil is sharpening to ensure that it won't seize up.If you are looking for a pencil sharpener that will be quick and can take some hard jabs and still get the job done, look somewhere else. If you want a pencil sharpener that will sharpen to very nice pointy tips every time, then prepare to exercise some surgical precision if you use this one.

I was returned my money for the item and postage for the return, but had to look elsewhere for a new sharpener.
