How to Survive the Loss of a Parent is a powerful, healing message for anyone going through or preparing for inevitable loss. Many people who usually function well are thrown for a loop when a parent dies. They're surprised at the complex feelings of love, loss, anger, and guilt, and at the unresolved issues that emerge. Therapist Lois F. Akner explains why the loss of a parent is different from other losses and, using examples from her experience, shows how it is possible to work through the grief. Review: It's amazing. Although I didn't have a lot of the ... - A coworker gave this book to me when I lost a parent. It's amazing. Although I didn't have a lot of the issues discussed in the book (e.g., unfinished business or a damaged relationship you weren't able to reconcile), the things discussed were very relevant to me as I went through the grieving process. It applies to much more than surviving the loss of a parent. It applies to losing anyone close to you, or maybe I should say anyone who "should" have been close to you. For folks who had things they were never able to say or relationships they were never able to reconcile, it gives concrete ideas on what you can do to find closure. It's now the book I recommend to my friends as we start to go through this stage of life (i.e., losing parents). Review: Much needed. - My mom died about 6 months ago, and I didnโt realize how badly I wanted to relate to someone about what it is like every day until this book came along. This is the least alone Iโve felt in a while, and I am so appreciative.

Recently lost my dad to cancer
I really enjoyed this and thought it was not only good for the grieving the loss of a parent but also for lessons on family dynamics in general. Quick read and helpful information.

Nice read, though not terribly helpful
Started reading this when my dad was dying, then continued after he passed. Interesting read, but not as helpful as Iโd hoped it would be. But maybe my emotions were just too raw at the time.

My therapist friend recommended it and I absolutely loved it
I lost my mom--and have felt lost. My therapist friend recommended it and I absolutely loved it! I intend to read it again as it reads more like a story filled with people I grew to care about more than a self help book... but in the process, it helped me. Offered me fabulous things to think about. My heart still aches but I feel like I'm not alone in my grief and somehow this helps.

This book was recommended to me by my counselor
This book was recommended to me by my counselor. It has helped me navigate through my grief & see that not all grief is the same. Highly recommend for anyone who is struggling with the death of a parent.

Returned it
It didn't feel applicable to me. As someone who just lost their dad, this book was not an immediate comfort because it's pretty dense and long. The author means well and I'm sure it would help someone, just not me.

Very helpful.
Highly recommended; I read it 3 times + gave copies to relatives + friends who lost family members; they also re-read multiple time... Recommended!
