Somewhere else I heard that you have to manually raise the flash, on this camera, in order to use it? Is that true? If so, how hard is it to do?

Yes, that is correct but it is a very simple flip up flash. You just have to remember and if you forget the camera will tell you on the image display.

The SX410 has a memory (SD/SDHC/SDXC) card slot. Depending on the seller, an SD card may or may not be included with the camera on purchase. However SD cards, running up to 256GB+, are readily available on the market. So storage capacity would depend on what you provide with the SD card.The CIPA rating for the SX410 is 185. The actual non-stop record duration would vary between users. If you'd be using your camera for very long durations at a time, additional batteries could be purchased & kept charged for swap outs.

will this camera work well to zoom in for close ups in nature

It works great,put on autofocus take the shot. Recording movies ZOOM in and out works super.

Do you prefer this 20mp/42x zoom, or should I go with 16mp/50x zoom on the SX530?

Personally I prefer the 20mp 40x zoom canon because it's more features and less expensive.
