We own three, and they are wonderful!
I just bought a third one here on Amazon, after enjoying the first two we own for several years. I bought those directly from the d.light website for about the same price. The first two have been used often, and look brand new thanks to the superior craftsmanship. They're made of hard plastic, and the switch and solar panel are well made too. These charge in my kitchen window and hold the charge for months in a closet if we don't use them. They are the first thing I grab when our power goes out, and the light lasts all night on the low setting. With the high setting, they're bright enough to ready by, and I especially like that there's no danger of a child or pet knocking one over and starting a fire. They have LED bulbs, so the light is bright and white, unlike a traditional oil lantern or a candle. The bail handle is another nice touch. I hang one on a hook on my pot rack in the kitchen, and can see to clean up or serve a meal. The kids take one and go play a board game when the power goes off, and I keep one in the bathroom too. The next day I just re-charge them in the window, and they're ready for the next outage. When you buy one of these lanterns, the company uses 10% of the profits to supply these lights to developing countries. I like knowing there are people on the other side of the world enjoying the same clear, dependable lights.

Excellent Product, I'm buying two more!
Just received this light about a week ago, and I want more! The light is actually very usable, even on low. Very light but solid construction too. Easy to carry with a pinky finger when both hands are full. And, it charges from any light (incandescent, fluorescent, etc.), not just sunlight. Mine also included a small USB charger cable. Don't see myself EVER using it, unless both electricity and the sun go out... :-) I want to get two more for our outdoor patio area. Also, it's bright enough to throw light ahead of you when you point the bottom of the unit in front of you rather than at the ground. Would be awesome for night hiking, beach walking, etc. The only thing I would suggest is that users be able to unscrew the lower light diffuser (although one reviewer said he does this, I haven't tried very hard yet to undo it.) This would allow backpackers to use the space inside for dry stuff like spare socks, TP, etc and not just be empty space in a backpack. This isn't now a concern for me, so my five stars still stand. Update: Yes indeed the diffuser can easily be unscrewed and removed, if you want to store stuff in there while not using the light. Also, don't look at the single LED light with the plastic diffuser removed! It is bright enough to leave an impression on your eyeballs, even when viewed on Low in a well-daylit room!! Update #2: Still very satisfied with this light. However, it really does need sunlight or USB to charge well. It does charge from light bulbs, but doesn't seem to last as long and actually faded out on me, after a few days of no sunshine and light bulb charge only, and about 8 hours of use. With solar charging, it's awesome!!! We actually used it for a night walk along the boardwalk built through the pines on the beach (zero streetlights nearby) and it worked great and lit up our way nicely, and about 20 feet around us too!

Unbelievably Reliable
These lanterns are unbelievable reliable. Bought 4 in 2012 and they are still going strong. They have been dropped by little kids, left in heat and cold, rained on and still going. Very bright for such a small light and light will last all night into the morning hours and beyond on low setting. Also, it charges on cloudy days so you do not need full direct sunlight. Only thing I would recommend changing is making the light on the warmer tone - a bit too cool blue for my taste. Cool tones like that have a kind of zombie apocalypse vibe imo, but I canโt knock off any stars for that reason. Get a few for emergencies or if you live in an area that loses power - you wonโt regret it. Also, part of sales go to a good cause. Good company and awesome product.

Amazing Solar Lantern from a Really Good Company
The LED lighting revolution is here, as is solar power. This lantern is a masterful combination of these two technologies, plus a third technology in the form of lightweight (lithium ion?) battery. It is simply amazing that something this bright and lightweight can stay lit for 8 hours! And it is even more amazing that the sun powers it! We also have a Rayovac lantern that uses 4 D batteries. The Rayovac is brighter, but also much heavier, requires costly batteries, and has a bigger environmental impact. In contrast the d.light has a quite functional light output for many uses, is much lighter, is powered by the sun, and has a 5-year expected lifetime and 2-year warranty. All for about the same price. This is truly a remarkable piece of engineering for the modern age. It has become the go-to portable light source in our household. Perfect for camping. But wait there is more! d.light is a new breed of for-profit company, in some circles called a social benefit company. d.light doesn't exist just to sell really good solar lanterns. They are plowing back much of their profits into helping others. d.light's purpose "is to create new freedoms for customers without access to reliable power so they can enjoy a brighter future." They aim to empower 100,000,000 lives with solar lighting by 2020, and they are well on their way to this goal. Check out their web site! Be glad that your purchase supports this broader purpose.

I use them everyday
We live overseas in the jungle and these are our main source of light at night. All the stats they post on their product have proven to be true. I've personally owned 20 of these. The first set of 10 I had lasted between 3-5 years but died due to battery life. I'm on my second batch of 10 now. Would I recommend this to someone? Depends. If you go camping twice a year, or want an emergency light for power outages, I would say no. These use lithium-ion batteries and they need to be used/charged on at least a semiregular basis. If you let the light just sit in your closet, it probably won't be dependable when you need it. These lights were designed for people who depend on them daily. Another positive, the plastic is durable. I charge these lights on hooks off my front porch. I've dropped various lights a half dozen times the 12 feet below onto rocks. They've never broken. Negative: 1. Charging Cable: The old models I bought came with a charging cord that plugged into a usb port. I still used this to charge my lights on raining days with my generator. The new models don't come with a cord! 2. Not easily repairable: You have to have security torx bit to even get the light open. The battery is attached via a clip style cable. But does d.Light sell replacement batteries that are already spot welded with the connecting cable? Nope. Does d.Light sell a replacement solar panel when the one you have is old, faded, and ineffective? Nope. I bought some batteries of the same specs and tried to solder them in, but the battery life wasn't improved. I didn't buy the cheapest batteries either. This company does have a good idea and a good product. They could make it better by selling the replacement parts for a person to recondition and further extend the life of their light. If we can't fix it ourselves, we don't own it, d.light does. For this product to be sustainable, you have to give us access to the parts to sustain it!

The greatest camping light ever made (not kidding).
I bought my first of these back in 2013 (had to check my history to confirm) and I still use it and have added a half dozen more over the years. I keep one in my car, my shed, my house (in several windows) and in my camping kit. They are unbelievable useful, completely reliable, always ready, and TOUGH. They have been on countless outdoor adventures, used as bike lights hanging off the handlebars, 2 am trips to the camp bathroom, used as a security light for a nervous youngster, and witnessed many late night card games at a picnic table. Solar recharging that actually works means that even if left on accidentally overnight you can charge it back up and have it ready to go again. I can honestly say that i've never had one die completely, they just charge so effortlessly that if you keep them in any sort of light it will always be ready to go. I LOVE these things and bother everyone I know incessantly until they buy one (or 6).

Fantastic!!!
We purchased several years ago. Charged them up and whenever there is a power outage just bring them out and don't have to worry about using up the batteries cuz we can just recharge them by sunlight. And, they run for a real long time with out needing charging! I've since purchased other solar lanterns that may put out a lot more light and are much more expensive with lots of promises but these solar lanterns are still my "go to" solar lanterns cuz they are so convenient and also recharge faster in the sunlight and also recharge in the house. I think I'm go to go this brand from now on. I also leave one with guests so they can use them to read or use to get to the bathroom with out having to walk to the light switch in the dark. They seem to like that. I just love these D.light lanterns. They charge up without much sunlight (even indoors behind windows), last a long time when used, and stay charged between uses. I've gotten other solar lanterns, including some neat ones that put out lots of light when clear plastic base is opened, but they seem to require stronger direct light (some don't charge behind windows), and don't keep their charge as well. I highly recommend purchasing several to keep a house lite as needed during power blackouts. When there is a power outage things can get really dark since there are no surrounding lights, and these lanterns are also really handy for carrying around the house or outside. Oh, we've also used them for camping. You can even put your keys or whatever in the lighting cup. I love this company! Update. Still loving this lantern. Had to buy more cuz gave some away for others to use during power outage or camping. These are great, aa good price, easy to carry, and hang or place on table for light.

Lightweight, Easy to Charge, Gentle on the Night Vision
This is a welcome addition to my camping gear. Pros: - Very light and much more convenient to carry around than other lanterns of comparable size. - Worked for hours every night for a week straight and was easy to recharge. I just used a carabiner to clip it onto the outside of my tent each morning. I really enjoy not having to worry about lugging around extra batteries during camping trips. - I usually worry about losing track of all my different cords for my different devices, but for this lantern, I just stuck the cord inside of the cup-like bottom portion of the lantern. This did not seem to affect how well the lantern lit up its surroundings in any way and I never have to wonder where the heck I put the cord. - Perfect for lighting up a 2 person tent or setting down on a small table between two camp chairs. This lantern is not as bright as other battery powered lanterns, but I see this as a plus. While out camping, I do want to see my immediate surroundings, but I don't want a glaring light destroying my night vision and making it hard to see the stars above or the trees around me. Plus, since the bulb is actually up against the top portion of the lantern and mostly hidden from direct view, I'm not blinded each time I happen to face it. Also, I don't like having a really bright light on constantly, especially when there are people in neighboring campsites. I feel that having a blazing white electric beacon kind of destroys the night time forest ambiance. That's the kind of thing we go camping to escape, right? Besides, when I need to see something more clearly, I can just pull out my flashlight. Cons: - Although the light weight of this lantern makes it easy to carry around and hang up, it does mean that it is very easy to knock over if set on a table or on the ground. I suppose it being top heavy doesn't help. I don't see this being a problem if used in the home. But when out camping on uneven ground where level surfaces are pretty much nonexistent, I found myself having to often pick it up and stand it up straight again. But really, the pros outweigh this little con.

Very versatile and rugged. An excellent product.
Great product and very rugged. I was not sure about the light level as I have the larger unit already but this one was very bright and easy to charge and use. The size is very convenient and it is almost indestructible. The two levels of light provide good options. If you can pay the extra also go for the S300 model as it has more functions and higher light levels to use in tents or RVs and in larger areas. This is good for personal use or two people close together. The larger lantern is a good purchase too.

Shines a good light
This is the fifth S20 lantern I have purchased - the others were gifts for family members. The lanterns are very good - well designed, seemingly well-built and do the job extremely well. Having dual-range light output is very helpful - sometimes you don't need a bright light and in this mode the battery lasts longer. They are also quite robust - we used them when attending to horses after dark and it was not uncommon for them to fall, or be dropped, onto wet and muddy pastures, all of which the lanterns survived.

A really really great product
I'm sailing around the world, currently in New Zealand after leaving the UK in 2013. I have tried many solar lights for anchoring or cockpit lighting but most died prematurely. When I flew back to the Uk in 2014 I bought two D-lights which have far surpassed anything else in terms of quality of light, battery performance and robustness. We hang one or two in the rigging at night when we're at anchor and use them to light the cockpit, in the morning three years on they still burn as brightly after 12 hours of darkness. On board our boat must be the toughest test anyone could put these lights through. They're out in all weather and just keep on working! These lights are fantastic, the best, unfortunately we lost one in a storm off Pitcairn in the South Pacific so I'm now buying two more and my son is bringing them out to the boat in April. Thank you for making such a great product.
