Hornby R7229 Analogue Train and Accessory Controller

Bought as a replacement as my nephew broke his. Arrived quickly and was well packaged.

This was the 2nd controller I've bought, apart from the one that the train came with (3 total up until now) - I bought this in June (2025), it's now October and this one has stopped working already so I'm having to buy a 4th one. I've had the train set for 2 years. This is now out of the return window given it's 5 months. What a waste of money. The quality is so poor.

we buy these from Amazon as delivery is prompt and free but Hornby should design this unitso it will not fuse if you do not switch to off if you change direction switch Hornby do warn you but they are used by children so costly mistakes.

I bought two in preparation for setting up a new trainset. One failed after about 30 minutes. Just dead. It's a cheaply made product with a variable voltage output. The reverse switch is particularly nasty. I bought a PWM controller from Amazon and it works so much better! PWM is commonly used to control motors in almost every product these days where variable speed is needed e.g. in electric drills. It provides a much smoother motion, especially at low speeds, and can help getting an engine moving from stationary. It works by switching the power on and off at thousands of times a second, varying the width of the 'gap' between the pulses.

I bought this because the original controller supplied with the train set (for my grandsons) kept failing. This item worked fine for about 5 minutes and stopped. I thought it was a problem with the track, did all the necessary. Grandsons had gone home by then. This controller worked on the next test, so I put it away for the next grandson visit. Connected everything for them today (3 weeks out of the return), it sort of worked for about 3 minutes and died. My childhood memories of Hornby are of a quality product. Not anymore. I should have taken heed of the other negative comments on this exceptionally poor quality product. Waste of hard earned money.
