G10 Greenback Guitar Speaker 16ohm

Posted on Marshall Forum. Greetings, This is my first post to these forums, just signed up. I actually have been reading the extensive post regarding the DSL5C amplifier. As a new purchaser of that amp I wanted to share my recent experience - like right now recent. First, I do like the amp very much. I have a modded Blues Junior Tweed III with Cannabis Rex speaker and recently sold a Tweaker 15, which essentially funded my DSL5C purchase. The BJr. III and the 5C complement each other nicely. The Blues Junior is very loud so I have a Rivera Rockcrusher on it. Great amp and great attenuator. But I wanted something that had more gain to learn some of my favorites like Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC etc. The Tweaker was nice but it seemed inconsistent for some reason. I don't know, maybe something was going bad in it - I bought it used. I figured it might be the tubes so I put two new power tubes in - JJ 6V6's. But it still seemed to vary when I used it. So I traded it in and got the DSL5C. This is my first Marshall in quite some time, my only other being a White 50 watt head I got back in the 90's. In any case I like the 5C very much. BUT, big but, I just put a 10" Celestion Greenback in it and let me tell you, if you get this amp, get this speaker. Holy Cow! I mean the speaker is brand new and will open up even more but what a difference. And there is plenty of bass - I do not feel any need to go 12" whatsoever. I am using a 2015 Gibson Les Paul Traditional with 59 humbuckers and I also have a 2013 HSS American Standard Strat with a Diamondback Humbucker in the bridge and Fat 50's in the other two positions. I am also running a Seymore Duncan Vapor Trail analog delay and a TC Electronics HOF reverb through the effects loop. First off, the amp is quieter, which I am very happy with. I play in a townhouse and sound carries throughout the place very easily. Not so much to the neighbors, but internally. So the headphone option is great and works pretty well. But this new Celestion reduced the volume enough, and just changed the character really, that it allowed greater use of the controls, and, by extension, allowed the sound to open up more because I could turn it up more. Second the really glassy, and fizzy, distortion is gone. It now really sounds like a real amp. Seriously. The tone is more balanced and much less fizzy sounding. A real growl instead of an over emphasized sizzle. I mean I got so excited when I heard it I ended up login in here and writing an excessively long first post ;-). But seriously. I was reading all the posts about the different mods analyzing everything. But this speaker change, at least with my setup, which I took particular care to describe above, totally changes the sound characteristic of this amp. Which leads me to my last point. After hearing how this sounds, I am not so sure the amp was not designed with this speaker in mind. Obviously they were building to a price point and putting a $120 speaker in this amp changes that considerably when the original speaker costs $35. But I really think this amp was designed with this speaker in mind. So I will stop here. But given all the reading I have been doing I thought my experience would be helpful to someone contemplating the purchase of this amp. In its current state I can get a variety of tones on both channels and do so, as one would, by adjusting volume and tone on my guitar. And one other point. Historically I have found it much more difficult to get good tone out my Les Paul then out of single coil guitars. Another reason I sought out this amp. But this amp sounds very very nice with my Paul. Sorry for the long post but I really wanted to share this. Take care, john

Replaced the stock 10” Vox Celestion X with this in a Vox ACTV4. Started with a tube swap to JJs, which made some difference, but the greenback turned it into a new amp entirely. Much more low end, much tighter. The rest of the range is also much wider and the breakup now sounds just like my AC15, also with a greenbacks but 12”. The little thin sounding practice amp is now a gig-worthy mini AC15. It’s amazing. Of course, $160 in upgrades to a $250 amp might be a lot, but it should have been designed this way in the first place. These are going for $300+ used with no upgrades. I’d put this one easily at $450, once you play it. I’d also note that some have suggested opening the back or porting the AC4TV. If you have one and have not opened it up, fear not. It’s ported out the top (heat vent) and across the top of the speaker mount (1/2 inch x 8 inches) and on both sides on the bottom sides of the speaker (1/2 inch x 3 inches).

I am probably not alone when I say , "I never really felt the amplifier sounded as good as it should". I suspected the speaker was the usual suspect. It sounded harsh , like a hack saw cutting through steel. It was not very inspiring. No know adjustments seemed to make a difference. I did some quick and dirty research and decided to give the Celestion Green Back a try. With the new Greenback in my "baby" Marshall, I get the sounds I imagined and more. Keep in mind... you probably need to break it in for at least 50 hours. Here is a few a tips for best overall sound: Tilt the amp against a wall or elevate it to ear level. It sounds best off axis, sit 8 feet to the left or to the right, never directly in front of the amp. With the amp saturated use the volume knob on the guitar to find the sweet spot - maybe 8 - 9 , but never 10.

I recently replaced the stock Fender speaker in my Fender Champ XD with the Celestion G10 Greenback. The stock Fender Champ XD is a good sounding, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive amp. It regularly receives favorable reviews, but for me it needed a little "more" in the lower frequencies. A thinner bottom end is not really surprising for a 10" combo amp, particularly if you are playing single coil pickups like the Stratocaster and Telecaster that I like to play thru this amp. Having read many favorable reviews of the Celestion 12" greenbacks, I decided to install the Celestion G10. The result was a very pleasant improvement. Not only did it add a bit more bottom end, but the richness of the midrange and smoother high end of this speaker really filled out the sound of Champ XD. It now makes great sounds playing both clean tones with full chords, and slightly over-driven, bluesy material. I should note that I rarely use the modeled sounds of the amp because I like the normal channel so much. The somewhat lower efficiency of the G10 also means that I can push the output tubes just into mild breakup at levels that won't shatter windows. Well worth the price and the minor effort involved in it's installation.

I bought this thinking for many years that I would get a particular tone out of this particular speaker. My personal opinion... I like the Vintage 30s better. The greenback seemed to lack some bottom end.

I've been a fan of Celestions (Vintage-30, G12H-70th Anniversary and both Blue & Gold speakers), but never tried the Greenbacks until now. I've started working with the Traynor YCS-50 amp, which offers both Marshall and Fender style tone settings. My usual favorites for speaker choices were either too bright, or clangy, or a little too 'efficient.' I tried running the head through all of the above, plus a THD 2x12 cab with proprietary Eminence drivers, but nothing worked for me. The description of the Greenback includes "creamy highs" and "tight lows" with a little compression, but no real interference in the clarity and mids, which is what I was sorely needing, and that's what I got. A pair of these in the THD cab work great, because it stays present and clear, but has much better control over the highs & lows. The Traynor YCS-50 toggles between British classic-rock sound and Fender tone, and the Greenbacks certainly favor the British side. But they also handle the other tones well--if not "exactly" like a Fender is supposed to sound, it is musically satisfying. It's amazing what a different speaker can do for the sound, and these delivered what I was looking for, as advertised.

I have a Peavey Classic 30 amp with a Blue Marvel speaker, it's very clean but harsh sounding even with the bass turned all the way up, it was still harsh sounding. Bought the Celestion Green Back (25watt) speaker and installed it in the Classic 30. I was very happy to hear more of a tone response that I got from the Blue Marvel and was able to get a smoother warmer tone out of the Celestion Green Back, even with over driving the pre-amp to get some distortion, it still sounded much smoother. The Blue Marvel was like fingernails on a chalkboard,ugh! I have seen some other people try a Celestion in their classic 30 but used a Cream back which wattage wise, is a poor choice, a 30 watt amp isn't going to drive a speaker rated at 60 or more watts to the point you would get a good sound.

This speaker was probably soaked at some point! Not good!!

Llegó antes de lo esperado. Hecha en UK, funcionando super bien. Esta me sorprendió que llegara con la caja de la bocina como única protección, no está de mas que al ser un producto de este tipo tuviera un embalaje especial o adicional, pero todo excelente y sin problema, solo una observación. Excelente respuesta en general, ya la conocía y me gustó mucho, realmente me funcionó bastante bien, el tamaño 10" no dejó nada que desear, suena excelente y no es sorpresa con esta marca y modelo. Lo que sí fue sorpresa nuevamente, y de las agradables fue que está Hecha en UK, recién pedí una Creamback del mismo tamaño y también Hecha en UK. Un gran artículo, sin lugar a dudas.

Big upgrade over the G10N-40 in my Orange AD-5 combo - more bass, less nasally mids, less harsh high end. Has sounded better the more I've played as it's broken in over the last three weeks.

Todos las reseñas dicen que las 12” son lo mejor y tal vez si, pero yo compré este para mejorar el sonido de mi amplificador origin5 y el resultado es brutalmente delicioso, unos bajos pronunciados y mucho ponch sin perder medios ni agudos, prácticamente lo reproduce todo, el producto es de primera calidad y luce muy bonito dentro de su gabinete jajaja, lo recomiendo mucho si no quieres gastar el exceso de dinero de un 12” y seguir teniendo un excelente sonido.

I replaced the horrific sounding 40 watt Orange brand speaker in my Orange crush 35RT. This is only a 30 watt speaker but so far so good! Sounds almost like a Marshall with GT-1 processor. Gotta Love Celestian!
