How many square feet does one back cover at 1 inch depth?

I would say approx 2 sq ft… I did the bottom of my indoor fireplace w has logs(standard size fireplace) and it took took 2 bags

I smell a chemical smell when using these. Switched out propane tank and still smells. Is this normal?

I have not noticed a smell from mine, so the smell you describe may not be normal. I have about 50 lbs installed. i burn natural gas in my pit.
