My favorite coloring books!
Love the Marjorie Sarnat coloring books! The designs are beautiful and creative. The pages are perforated which makes them easy to tear out.

Fun, Whimsical and Wonderful Images!
Reviews are very important to me when choosing which coloring books to purchase. So I have decided to begin writing my own. The moment I opened this book, I was in love. The images are fun and whimsical - screaming to be filled with bright, vibrant colors. Yes, the face of the cat is identical throughout - some may be disappointed by this. I see the cat as a secondary element of the drawing. Each page is 'themed', (eg: travel, flowers, cuckoo clocks, writer, fairy, etc), The theme, to me, is the primary element of the image. As for the book itself, paper is not a concern to me, since I copy the pages so I can color them more than once using different implements. Gel pens, color pencils and fine tip markers are the most common implements I use. The paper is thicker than your average copy paper, but I would never color in the book without putting a protective sheet in between pages. Marker will bleed through - Sharpie would bleed the most, Crayola the least. The gel pens don't bleed through, but the color shows through the back (not sure if this will make sense to you - the reader). Most books you would not want the binding to break easily, but with coloring books, most people like the book to lay flat, whether for coloring or copying. This binding 'breaks' open very well. Allowing me to copy pages without removing them from the book. The pages are perforated!!! Coloring books loose at least 1/2 a star, in my opinion, for not having perforated pages. These are also one-sided pages, also important enough to loose 1/2 a star over. Overall, the images in this book are fun, with crisp lines (even the fine lines) and minimal white space. Perhaps not for the youngest of coloring enthusiasts, unless they are a little more advanced in their coloring skills. (I did use these types of books to help hone my daughter's fine motor skills). I am looking forward to bringing out the brightest (and least used) of my pens and pencils for these images. Glitters, metallics and neons - oh my!!!

Creative Cats is Purr-fect!
There are few things better in life than a new box of crayons and a superbly excellent coloring book. As an adult, I have traded in my crayons for other artistic media...but I still love a great coloring book - and the Creative Haven series is STUPENDOUS!! The delicious white paper just begs to be colored on. The various drawings of majestic felines will make anyone an instant cat lover...the incredible illustrations of cats, combined with the beautifully simplistic backgrounds, will make anyone an instant Marjorie Sarnat lover. Her style is eclectic and fun, comfortable and familiar, but foreign and interesting at the same time. You will not get bored with this artistic book of black-and-white drawings- quite the contrary. It's difficult to choose which page to start coloring first - the pages suck the viewer into their universe, making it tough to completely finish one page before starting on another. Try it yourself - you'll quickly see what I mean. Bottom Line: Coloring can be a great relaxation activity - something you can do mindlessly, while zoning out. Not with Marjorie Sarnat's Creative Cats! The drawings are hypnotic and interesting - coloring the designs is fulfilling and satisfying. This is one coloring book you want to leave just the way it is so you don't ruin its beauty...but the pull to fill the designs with fantastic color is just too great. (If you deeply dislike cats, don't worry! The Creative Haven line has many other amazing topics by various artists.)

Fun to color, but repetition is a big issue
I very recently started adult coloring as a way to relax at night. I'm finding it even more effective than I hoped and purchased a number of Creative Haven's books. I love the paper quality...in some of my books by other publishers, my pens tend to bleed more and look messy. Here they go on smoothly and it's a little easier to make a distinct line. I also like how the lineart is darker and thicker than in some other books, making it both easier to see and helping to reduce bleeding between segments. Pens WILL bleed through to the next page, but that's easily solved by putting a blank protester sheet in between or by simply removing the working page from the book. Pages are perforated, something that should be standard but some other publishers don't have! My one big negative is the repetition of designs. This applies both within a single book and across some books in the series. In Creative Cats, there are some pictures with cats in similar poses that feel a little bland. More frustrating is the constant re-use of background designs. There are only a few styles of flower, for instance, that are used on almost every page and become very boring to color after the first three or four times. Creative Cats, Creative Owls, and Creative Dogs all share these identical design elements. This is of course because the artist is the same for all three books. While the art IS lovely, it does become tiresome to color the same tulip on almost every page across three books. Other artists seem to have more variety, such as in the Art Nouveau book. So while I enjoy Marjorie Sarnat's artwork, I would not have purchased three books by them if I had realized how often background designs are reused.

I love to color in my free time or when I’m a bit down, it’s really good.

Wow! what an amazing cat themed colouring book this is so beautiful and exquisite. I’m having the best time and it’s so relaxing colouring with the truly gorgeous cat art. Beautifully designed and the artwork is stunning!! Great for all ages I’m 54 and loving it but children and all the way up to elderly would love this. It would make a great gift.

Marvellous, interesting, creative designs on quality paper. I have monthly hospital appointments where reading is impossible, and this book has come in very handy. The patterns are intricate enough that each one takes time and patience: you cannot race through the book. You won't feel like money has been wasted. Of all the colouring books I have seen, this is the most beautiful and I am not one to make claims like 'the most' 'the best' 'my favourite', but in this case, it's an easy call. I once had an exquisite antique porcelain cat with paisley hand-painted all over its body: this book brings to mind that statue, my one and only knick-knacks, now lost to a flood. Snif, snif, wail, wail. I prefer finer pointed markers for this. The paper is thick enough for marker and the designs so complex that the richness of marker colour saturation is superior to pencil crayon. This would make a terrific gift for an older child (9+) or adult of any sex. On a 'non-productive' day at work I made photocopies (by request :) and my four male coworkers coloured all day long.
