Expensive, but worth it!
I love these oil-based professional colored pencils. They glide on easily, have vibrant colors, and are easy to blend. The leads are long lasting. The applied color has good light-fastness. The set of sixty pencils gives you a good selection of colors, and with its superior blending capability, the color palette you can create is endless. Another bonus I find with the Faber Castel pencil line is that the colors are consistent across products. This means that the color names and pigments for the Polychromos oil pencils are the same as those for their Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils. The set, packaged in a metal tin, arrived in perfect shape. For those who are considering purchasing the wax-based Prismacolor Premier colored pencils, which cost less than the Polychromos, I'll provide a little comparison here, since I own both. There have been many complaints about product control with the Mexico-manufactured Prismacolors. Lead breakage is a problem, especially if you drop a pencil. This is because the lead is not glued to the wood. The barrels may be chipped or warped. The lead cores are sometimes off-center too. But in the German-manufactured Polychromos, quality control is excellent, the lead is attached firmly to the wood, and I have experienced no lead breakage or other anomalies. The Prismacolor pencils have softer leads than the Polychromos and wear down far faster. That being said, I enjoy using both brands of pencil. They both have bright colors, and they even blend together well. If I have to give any negative comment, it's that the Polychromos pencils (and the Prismacolors as well) have round barrels, so they roll around on a table easily. A hexagonal shape would have been better not only to control the roll but also to hold them more firmly. But that's such a minor complaint that it doesn't detract from my five-star rating.

Start with the best!
I am no artist but I do love to all sorts of paper crafts. I got on the coloring book band wagon and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I purchased set after set of pencils starting with the basic Crayola brand type and finally arriving at Polychromos. Wow, if I had known better, I would have started with these exceptional pencils. When starting any new kinds of art, I research relentlessly. I love watching videos on YouTube so that I can become informed on techniques and products. I learned so much, and continue to learn. Most people were recommending Polychromos or Prismacolor. However, as much as people liked their Prismacolor they have a "defect" of sorts in that they break frequently. I never tried them but find that these Polychromos do not break......at all! They sharpen beautifully (I use a hand sharpener and electric and have great results with both). I have learned to lay down color in layers (see, I am not a trained artist) and this has been one of the best things I figured out. What amazing colors, fabulous shading and ease of use. I have some arthritis in my fingers and these pens have no drag at all making it comfortable for me to color for long periods of time. My only minor disappoint is the lack of some colors. I started with the 24 set put had no purples at all. I was ready to move up and settled on the 60 as I really did not "need" the 120. I have many more colors but still am lacking....this time the oranges. I went onto Dick Blick and immediately ordered single colors I feel are missing, i.e., flesh tones, etc. You won't be sorry ordering these.

The best colored pencils--worth the price! Decent range kit.
I've officially tried every colored pencil on the market from Crayola to Prismacolor and finally bit the bullet and bought this set of Polychromos. These are, for me, hands down, the best there is. I have two pet peeves: broken leads and wax bloom. They are insanely well made and feel incredible in your hand. They are slightly thicker and more substantial in your hand and the paint on the outside is very smooth and shiny so they feel great. The leads do NOT break inside the shaft and since they are oil based, they don't "bloom" later with the yucky white wax film. I use these mostly for my daily journal sketchbook and I did find that the color will transfer off of the back of one page onto another, sort of like a carbon copy. They don't smear, but the color will transfer on previous pages. It comes right off with an eraser though. This is a good kit to start with a nice range of colors, but after using it for a while, I'm noticing that there are some colors missing that I reach for regularly and some color ranges that are very similar, for example, there are about five reds that are just a semi-tone different, yet really no skin tone color range at all. Because of this, I wish I had sprung for the larger kit since they are so expensive to buy individually.

There is nothing like a Faber-Castell Polychromos
Faber-Castell Polychromos are the best pencils I have ever used. The lift tray is great and sits in the lid easily making the tin case itself functional to display all the colors. They sharpen up to a very nice point to help with the details in artwork. These pencils perform best on Canson Bristol Board paper as the paper has the right amount of tooth to keep layering colors. It doesn’t like copy paper very much nor should anyone use copy paper with a fine art colored pencil. They don’t smudge or break easily. The quality of these pencils are the best in the market. I love prismacolor as well. There is a comparable difference between Polychromos and Prismacolor as they are like night and day. Theres many folks that list many differences between the brands, but the key to using Polychromos is patience as they act differently than a wax based pencil or a prismacolor that lays down color faster. Both are fantastic pencils, but I prefer Polychromos as it gives that storybook quality that I love and a more rich color even if it’s slightly less vibrant than a Prismacolor. I would recommend these pencils to artists who are serious about their artwork as most colors in the set are lightfast up from 50 to 100 years comparable to Prismacolor in which are not as lightfast.

Best colored pencils
Best colored pencils I’ve ever used. Do not waste your money on cheaper sets. These are so smooth, blend so well and have amazing color payoff. I have wasted my money on cheaper sets listed on Amazon and they are junk. Additionally, the color naming is the same as traditional universal names

Amazing pencils
Does not get any better. Absolutely love these pencils. They feel amazing, they color amazing and they even look amazing. They hold an edge well, not too soft and very vivid

These are good colored pencils but are they worth the price?
I bought these pencils a little bit under a month ago and I wanted to see how they truly work. The pencils are very sturdy and are beautiful colors. The wrap around the pencil is beautiful and makes it very pleasing to look at. The blending is very nice and lays on each other well. Also since it is oil based there is no wax bloom and it is very nice! The package came in and no pencils broke and the box was in perfect shape! There are many pros to these colored pencils but you need to know the cons. If you don’t have a super point sharpener for the pencils, it is a little aggravating to use and to sharpen normally. It is super shiny on smooth paper and looks a little weird. Also It is really difficult to organize the colors because they are arranged in the box a little weird. I personally don’t like Prisma colors because they break so easily and the Faber Castells dont! But the price for these pencils are insane! I don’t really know if they are worth it. That is not something I can decide for you. If you enjoy prisma colors softness then you won’t like faber castells. Hope this helped!

Excellent Product. One of the Best Coloured Pencils on the Market.
Faber-Castell Polychromos is a beautiful artist quality coloured pencil set. The down-side, they are a expensive; a full set of these is costly which is why I had to settle with a 60-pc set for now (but plan on upgrading again in the near future). This set has a wonderful range of colours, and these pencils are delightful to work with. I am currently in the search for the perfect coloured pencils and I have purchased the main brands along with their water soluble counter-part. All have their pros and cons; as expected, the pricier ones - usually artist grade pencils, are the better products with some exceptions, and the Polychromos are becoming my favourite. Although I still like the Prismacolor due to the range of colours available, its smooth application, and much lower price point (in Canada), the Polychromos are just as dynamic, smooth, with beautiful, vibrant pigments. Another plus and this sets it apart from the Prismacolors: these are durable due to a slightly thicker pencil. Their rich pigments blend and layer well, mixes well with other brands, leaves no wax bloom, and you are able to get a sharp edge with very minimal breakage- actually I've had ZERO lead breakages while sharpening these, unlike Prismacolor, and the Derwent Coloursoft's. The lightfastness of the pigments is outstanding and surpasses Prismacolor; 102 are rated *** (Excellent) , 16 are rated ** (Very Good) with only 2 out of the 120 are rated * (Good). If you are not on a budget and can afford these sets (I recommend the larger sets), these are highly recommended for artists of all ages and skillsets. The only colours where other brands gave the Polychromos a run for their money is the black and White. This is where I found the Prismacolor edged out the Polychromos slightly (although all take a back seat to the exquisitely Black and White Stabilo ALL). Still the Faber-Castell Polychromos is a high quality coloured pencil set; smooth laydown/application, vibrant, professional output, great durability, and a dynamic colour selection of 120 colours. These will enhance all of your coloured pencil art pieces. This handsome 60-pc set contains the pencils within 2 trays- stacked, inside a durable tin, and a small booklet is included. Love it. If price is not an issue fellow artists- get the 120-pc set. Do it!
