Scales is geared toward the 14 to 26 year old female readership, but as a fantasy will appeal to the broader audience. Non-violent, entertaining, with a hint of romance. It is a page turner, with no sagging middle. Vivian Blue has always been a little different. But she had no idea how different, until Hatch Lancaster, Dragonkind's bad boy, enters her life on a secret mission. Within a short time, Hatch is her boss, her friend, and a man who haunts her heart and her dreams. And everything Blue has known and believed turns out to be a lie. Surrounded by subterfuge and an unidentified danger, Blue is left with Hatch as her only protection and defense. But as she turns more and more to Hatch, the danger seems to come more from the man himself than from the mysterious activities in Dragonkind. While the head dragon of one clan is trying to form a Joint Council to resolve the enmity between Dragonkind, Hatch is torn between his growing attraction for Blue, his responsibilities to the revered clan leader, and loyalty to his homeland of Concord. Blue fears she'll never fit into his world. She must choose between him and the place she's always called home. Review: Must Read Love Mystery - This mystery/love story begins with a handsome Hatch Lancaster, who soon meets the stunning Vivian Blue (even the names suck you right in). I melted as I turned the pages and fell in love with the main characters as well as their friends and family. Every time you think you can't fall any deeper in, you melt just a little bit more. I have not loved a book this much since the Twilight series, truly...and I have looked. The idea of Dragons living in the human world, looking like humans is a truly organic idea. Having the two lovely main characters fall in love with one another in front of your eyes is such an amazing thing, especially when set to the tune of the Hawaiian Islands. Aside from the obvious love story is the not so obvious mystery of the "new Dragon", Vivian Blue's powers. Learning about her strange new powers as she does is very cool. The author writes as if you are right there with her, which is why I could not put this book down. The brilliant fantasy worlds she creates feels so real, I wanted to go looking for The Panther Hotel on Maui, and the "tunnel" to Dragonkind. The detail she puts into the Dragons SCALES and what they mean will almost bring you to tears. The thought involved with what powers each of them has, and the back story will leave you begging for more. I can't wait to see what she comes up with for the next book and I hope it's soon because I am just itching to see what happens. This book gave me that adrenaline feeling throughout....love story to action, comedy to power issues to discoveries, to family togetherness to victorious moments. I know that may sound funny, but, when you find a good book, it's love. And for me, this book just is......my hope scale....I won't ruin it for you, so to understand what that means exactly you will just have to read this fantastic book for yourself! Review: Must Read Love This Book!!! - For awhile now I've been trying to find another Twilight. A love story, an adventure and a fantasy to take me away. Yesterday I found it when I scrolled through the pages that unlocked the the story of Vivian Blue in SCALES by Acacia Awai. Never have I dreamed of a world where dragons do exist. But these dragons walk amongst us with their powers and abilities, leaving humans none the wiser. Our story starts with one particularly yummy dragon, Hatch Lancaster, when he is sent to Maui on a secret mission. So secret even he has no idea why he is sent there. "You'll know it when you see it." is the only cryptic clue he has to go on. There in Maui is where he meets our main lady Vivian Blue and he is instantly enthralled. Not only does her beauty captivate, but also the fact that he knows she has no idea that she too is a dragon amongst humans. The mystery unfolds as Blue finds out who and what she really is. So many questions, too little answers. Hatch tries to protect Blue from unknown dangers that lurk. Not knowing who to trust and who to rely on. The only thing that is certain is the new found love they have found is literally set in the palms of their hands, and that may make all the difference. Throw away everything you think you may know about dragons! Awai has skillfully blended reality and fantasy on this new take on dragon kind. I found the book fast paced and page turning. I could not put it down. Not only do I love the main characters of Hatch and Blue, but the supporting cast help to solidify my love for the story. Like all great series this book ends with me wanting more... I can't wait to read the sequel and continue my journey through dragon kind.

I Should Have Read This Sooner!
I've had this book for a while but I kept putting off reading it because I was so busy and also it's not my preferred genre. I'm not much into romances and I'm picky about my fantasy/sci-fi/alternate reality kind of stories. Joss Whedon spoiled me that way I guess--too many writers and/or directors don't live up to my standards any more. But this book has something uniquely special about it. For one thing, it's set in Hawaii and the tropical sensuality of the place really adds a certain aura to the story that is enticing. Awai sure knows her home state. For another, whoever would have thought of Dragons like the ones Awai creates in her Scales series? Especially dragons like Hatch Lancaster! Completely unexpected and like nothing you've ever read before. At times I grew a little impatient with the love story between Hatch and Blue, but I blame that on my personal disinterest in romances in general. I'm a mystery/suspense gal so if things get too kissy, kissy I'm all "Get on with the story already." Awai handles both romance and suspense with a fun and riveting flair that keeps you reading till the end. It's good to know there are two more books coming in the series, because with an iceberg tip this entertaining, you just know you have to see what the whole glacier looks like. (Ach, iceberg metaphors about a book set in Hawaii--what am I thinking?!)

empty story with sexual content
How explicit do you expect YA book to be? to me this book was pretty racy, i suggest you screen it first. yes, there is talk about marriage, characters get down to business a few times and get interrupted. If you enjoyed twilight you might like this book... but to me the story was empty of content. And full of disjointed phrases. And inconsistent. Heroine about to die for obscure reasons ... too many times to my liking. empty dialogues, very slow read. Book penned out of boredom and not out of desire to enlighten the reader

Romeo & Juliet in Drangonland
With this tale set in Hawaii, Acacia Awai carries us from one mystery to another to yet another as the dragon hero of (Hatch Lancaster) and human, Vivian Blue, seek to unscramble the powers that draw them together yet threaten their union. Creative, suspenseful, and often fun, this Romeo and Juliet story of enemy dragon camps explores the complex passions of love and hate triggered by crossing forbidden barriers, a battle that takes place unseen by the human world that surrounds them. As a story that pits individual love against group loyalty, SCALES is a read that should appeal to audiences beyond the fantasy that is its center. I'm not ordinarily a reader of fantasy, but I found this story a real page-turner.

Wonderfully heartwarming tale
This is a great book. Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. The characters are well developed and the backdrop feels so real. I could certainly imagine myself back in Hawai'i, interacting with the characters. I laughed a little, but I shed quite a few tears. I really didn't want the book to end - I felt as though I could have picked up the next book in the series right away. So, where is it!? :)

A great read during cold nights
I had a good time reading Scales. Romance isnโt what I usually read, but I found myself pleasantly surprised. A fun original fantasy, in and out of our world. Autumn has my native Sweden firmly in its grip, so I enjoyed being transported to sunny Hawaii, (even though Iโm grinding my teeth with envy). Acacia knows how to write dialogue, and the book was easy to read with a good flow to it. So, whatโs next for Hatch and Blue?
