Ampersand Museum Series Scratchbord, 1/8 Inch Depth, 9X12 Inch (CBB09)

I bought this as an alternative to working on black paper, and it has been a completely different experience in the best way. The black is deep and crisp, and the contrast you get when scratching through to the white underneath is really striking. I was brand new to scratchboard when I started, so there was definitely a learning curve. I normally create by drawing onto a surface, and scratching into one feels surprisingly different. Metal scratching tools were not very intuitive for me at first. They can skip a little, and the board is very pressure sensitive. The good news is that you do not need to press hard at all to remove the black surface, but it also does not feel like the coating scratches off accidentally with normal handling. I honestly did not love the feel of the process at first, but both the board and the technique really grew on me as I learned how to work with them. So far, my favorite piece of art I have created was made on this board using Ampersand scratching tools. I am still very much a beginner with scratchboard, but this has made me want to keep exploring the medium.

Love these boards. I only use these for my Scratchboard artwork as they are the best quality boards. They arrived in tact, no scratches or dents and on time.

I have used several scratch art papers and boards but this is truly the best. Scratches off beautifully and I love the solid panel its on. Super smooth, lots of sizes, and nice thickness. Makes scratch art fun. Perfect for my art sales.

These are great. The high contrast of the black and white is very appealing to the eye. Two of the three came with a very small chip on each corner, so if you are a fine artist/perfectionist that might be an issue.

The best surface for doing scratchboard. If you are a serious artist, do not waste your money on the cheaper scratch paper. I recently started playing with scratchboard and found the Ampersand boards responsive and easy to use.

Like scratching on butter compared to scratch paper. Still love scratch paper for every day but for a more serious application or a commissioned piece this is the only thing I will use. I have learned the hard way that mistakes will be made but all you need is matt black India Ink and and a matt top coat spray and no one can tell. Not even you.

These are best in the industry

Perfect size for a series of scratchbord panels I’m working on. Fantastic and easy to carve with a variety of tools. You don’t necessarily need the scratchbord tools to work with the material, anything sharp or abrasive you can think of will create wonderful and clear varieties of texture that helps your design come through much more clearly compared to similar pieces of scratch paper. Two did arrive slightly dinged up in the corners which is completely not the norm for Ampersand so I’m going to call it an error possibly during shipping or on Amazons end. If the situation repeats in the future I will reduce the number of stars. Thankfully I really rather enjoy the way Sumi ink looks on top of the scratchbord for this particular project vs other ones which is what the company recommends if you make an error in carving. All in all a wonderful product from one of my favorite art supply companies!

Ampersand brand has always been good and consistent quality. Would not buy any other Brand. Sadly it’s getting harder and harder to find a supplier at a reasonable price in Canada. Amazon you should be able to do better.
