It works!
I love feeding my woodpeckers, but when the starlings and grackles devoured my suet in less than a day, I was about to give up. This feeder has solved the issue! The woodpeckers took no time in figuring out the process, and I have also had nuthatches and even a chickadee enjoy the feast. The feeder is well-made and attractive. Highly recommended!

Glad I found this!
So glad I found this, as the blackbirds and starlings were consuming all the suet at an unsustainable pace! Took quite a while for all my woodpecker friends to figure this feeder out, but they finally did. It's hanging about 12 inches above the top of the fence, so the blackbirds and starlings can still get a suet snack if they really want to...it's actually fun to watch them sit on the fence and just hop up to get a quick bit of suet, over and over again. If you're having the same troubles I was (larger birds overwhelming your suet feeder), I highly recommend this style of feeder!

Woodpeckers love these
These fixtures have worked out terrifically for my woodpeckers and prevent ravaging from starlings and grackles. It took several weeks for the woodpeckers to find the obscured suet cakes, but they eventually did and they love my DIY cakes. It helps if these can initially be hung above a perching/standing area so the woodpeckers can see the cakes above, but far enough up that more aggressive birds can't feed from a perched surface below. Will be buying at least one more of these.

Loved this feeder until…
I absolutely loved this feeder, it was easy to clean, easy to refinish after taking the abuse of 2 winters. It was never starling or jay proof because as much as people claim they can’t go upside down—they can. But it was always squirrel proof, especially with a small modification (seen in photo 2) of a latch over the top securing the lid (first spring I had it squirrels figured out how to lift the lid and steal the entire suet brick). For 3 years it was great, and maybe to some that will feel like a good expenditure of their money ($7/yr since I purchased it for $21) but I’ve had other feeders last much longer than that so it would have been nice to have it last longer. So this early spring, a squirrel decided to chew through the wood to get the suet. No I'm not kidding, it looks like a beaver got a hold of it. Yes this squirrel is a decent sized chubby SOB but the wood should not have been soft enough for this level of damage. Especially after repeated cleanings, repaintings, and use of waterproofer on the outside for protection. The wood was not rotting upon inspection—it was just a soft low quality wood. The staples used to hold on the grate could have been better also. And yes, with several modifications this thing lasted for 3 years—but should we really have to make so many modifications to an item we purchased brand new before it can function as described? Nope.

Roof split
I purchased this feeder in July 2016. Within four months, the roof split, and a piece of it broke off. I decided to contact the seller, Nature's Way Bird Products, to help me remedy this under their five-year warranty. They were very prompt and courteous in answering my claim. Initially they asked me to send them one or two pictures of the broken roof, to which I complied. Their reply concurred that the damage would be covered under their five-year warranty, but would incur a shipping charge. At that point I decided the cost would not be worth the investment.I have noticed several recent one-star reviews of dissatisfied customers claiming the roof on this feeder had split. There seems to be a recent trend of defective materials being used in these feeders. I strongly feel that a consumer of a defective product, which breaks shortly after purchase, should incur zero cost in the replacement of that product. In the grand scheme of things, the amount of time and effort I have spent on this issue far outweighs the cost of this feeder. This is strictly a matter of principal at this point. Hence my one-star review. While I’m on a roll, I’d like to add my two cents about the functionality of upside down feeders. Some of the other negative reviews stated that squirrels had their way with this feeder. In all fairness, nowhere does it say that this feeder deters squirrels, raccoons nor the occasional tree sloth. I have tried several different styles of suet feeders, and by far, in my experience, this style of feeder keeps out the highest percentage of undesirables. To wrap it up, I’d like to say I would not recommend this particular feeder, since the quality of wood is questionable. I would, however, recommend a similar style feeder made of composite materials. I have seen them on Amazon, but they are twice the cost. I have owned a seed feeder comprised of composite materials for several years now, and it is still as good as the day I purchased it.Thanks for listening, happy birding, and drive safely.

Great idea to keep the squirrels off the suetIt took a few weeks for the little birds to find it - but they are coming around more now that the chrip is getting out about the new suet station
