Expressive Therapies Continuum 1st Edition

During graduate school to become an art therapist, I read many, many books about art therapy. This one is simply the best. The author provides a strong theoretical foundation for the use of art media in therapy, and rationale for the use of specific media with different individuals. It is not a cookbook of art therapy directives, as are many art therapy books, but rather it provides an education in how to psychologically and developmentally conceptualize art therapy and the use of media in order to create your own effective and appropriate directives in session. I can't recommend this book highly enough for practicing art therapists and students.

This book explores an approach for conceptualizing the benefits of art therapy. Though the organization of the material could be better, there are some valuable ideas included here. It is refreshing to hear the author describe how various expressive modalities can benefit one another in this age of specialization.

I have been an artist all my life and a therapist for 25 years. I have been using skills from both disciplines for many years. This book provides a comprehensive model for understanding the process of art therapy; yet it's easy to understand. The material is well grounded in research and of scholarly quality. This book is a"must have resource" for any clinician aspiring to provide art therapy to their clients.

As a student in a graduate art therapy program I can say that instructors return to this time and time again as a reference. I had to have it for my own library and it has already proven very useful.

The book itself is excellent but the condition of the book was poor. It was advertised as good condition but someone had gone through with a highlighter and highlighted text the whole way through. I'd like to exchange.

Excellent resource! Hinz presents a very cohesive theory and unique approach to using art making and artistic materials therapeutically.
