Unhappiness, says bestselling author Harriet Lerner, is fueled by three key emotions: anxiety, fear, and shame. They are the uninvited guests in our lives. When tragedy or hardship hits, they may become our constant companions. Anxiety can wash over us like a tidal wave or operate as a silent thrum under the surface of our daily lives. With stories that are sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking, Lerner takes us from "fear lite" to the most difficult lessons the universe sends us. We learn: how a man was "cured in a day" of the fear of rejection -- and what we can learn from his story how the author overcame her dread of public speaking when her worst fears were realized how to deal with the fear of not being good enough, and with the shame of feeling essentially flawed and inadequate how to stay calm and clear in an anxious, crazy workplace how to manage fear and despair when life sends a crash course in illness, vulnerability, and loss how "positive thinking" helps -- and harms how to be our best and bravest selves, even when we are terrified and have internalized the shaming messages of others No one signs up for anxiety, fear, and shame, but we can’t avoid them either. As we learn to respond to these three key emotions in new ways, we can live more fully in the present and move into the future with courage, clarity, humor, and hope. Fear and Other Uninvited Guests shows us how. Review: Real & Readable - This author puts herself out there and lets the reader know that she too experiences real fear - but there are ways to overcome that fear and anxiety . The book is a very fast read, with practical tips and suggestions, and humor. Yet, she is upfront in saying that there is no quick "cure" or fix for fear in one's life. The way out of fear has to be facing your fears and doing it scared! For anyone struggling with fear or anxiety, this is worth reading as a motivation to look at the area deeper and to at least begin the journey of dealing with fear in your life. For some, it will give you the courage to take more steps in overcoming fear in certain areas of your life. Review: I recommend for people want to learn emotions. - Each example and experience is unique .I take time for understanding ( it was not easy) but it is sens and logic. I love Harriet Lerner I buy all books I need read 5 of her . Really I recommend.

Fear Jerker
I picked up this book after agreeing to go skydiving which is something I said I would never do. I became curious about my various fears and the thought that I would jump from a plane but I allow fear and shame to stop me from being my best in other ways. So, I skydived and it was an incredible experience. I also discovered that I felt fear and shame about reconnecting with people I love that I've lost touch with. I feared their response and felt shame about how much time had passed. This read was the perfect nudge to get out of my head and rise above fear.

good solid Harriet Lerner
I read this book after having read The Dance of Intimacy several months ago. The Dance of Intimacy was like a huge wake-up call for me, whereas this book was very interesting and helpful, just not as earth-shattering. I am generally an anxious person, and I did learn a little bit about living with my anxiety and not making it worse. But I didn't connect with all the stories the way I did with the previous Lerner book I read. I still think Harriet Lerner is an amazing insightful woman. I'm glad that I read and bought this book, but maybe my expectations were a little too high. I would give the book 3 1/2 stars if I could.

Great book
Accessible writing style and enjoyable read. The author gives many examples along with clear explanations of concepts, so the reader walks away with a better understanding and ability to apply the concepts. She also shares personal stories, helping the reader to connect with her experiences and feel more comfortable with their own fear.

Recommended by Dr. Read the sample chapters. My First Kindle Purchase
Recommend by my doctor. Great tips for dealing with fear that triggers a depressive episode. No exercises except by example in the narrative. Read the first two chapters in the sample download. The rest of the book is less vanilla than chapter two and discuses tougher cases. Most of the cases are gender generic, but a few are more directed to females. I am male and still found the book informative and helpful. An honest book that does not promise to heal you overnight by reading it.

Excellent Self Help
This is one of many excellent books by this author - Harriet Lerner. It is a great resource for understanding the dysfunction in your past and changing your future. It is easy to read and understand, very down to earth. She uses real life people and their situations as examples to explain the different situations which may pertain to your life. It is definitely a book you may read more than once depending on circumstances in your life and one you can definitely pass on to others.
