Fredrix 3495 Canvas Pad, 8" x 10" Canvas, Primed and Ready to Paint, Sturd, Can be Mounted When Dry, 10 Sheets per Pad, White

I am just getting back to painting after a long hiatus, and my efforts are not extraordinary. (Yet? <-- trying to stay positive about here!) Sticker shock has hit me big time with the price of prepped canvas boards and stretchers. Without a circle of friends to go in on a bulk purchase, I've been a little cheap about having appropriate surfaces to paint. Super small canvases, super cheap ones, painted over ones, and about anything else you can think of. This canvas pad from Fredrix is doing a much better job for me than any of those other interim solutions, especially for acrylics. The "paper" is thick, flawless, and feels (to the touch and to the brush) much like an actual canvas. As I've worked through this pad, I've learned a few tricks to make the most of this medium: * Tear out each page carefully. You might have to score the pages around the middle of the pad to get a clean tear on them * Going to paint wet on wet? Mount the paper on a board. You can be super classy like me and staple it down. Bulldog clips work too, but I find them visually distracting. The mount keeps the paper from curling up while you're working. * If you're working mostly dry, you can get away with using paperweight instead. * In acrylics, I've found it takes more paint than usual to get a pigmented background using this paper. If you know you want a darker background, I lay that down first, almost like a second primer. Saves loads of frustration later. The only thing I do not like about the Fredix Canvas Pads is that they are not available the size of my walls. How fun would that be?

I've recently taken up acrylic painting so I need to do a lot of practice if I'm going to get better. I tried using acrylic paper & mixed media paper to practice and study on but it wasn't translating to my paintings (the paper responds differently than canvas and the methods I could do on the paper wouldn't work the same for me on the canvas). These canvas books are NICE! I like the canvas and paint right in the book with the cover folded over the back. The canvas isn't too toothy so I can create realistic effects and blend easily. Once the painting dries I just move to the next page. I like that I'm able to practice a subject on canvas and a lower cost and these finished "paintings" aren't taking up a lot of space. I've used separate canvas pads for different subjects so I now have a book of ocean scenes and one of forest scenes that I can look back through as I'm planning a painting. Definitely worth the price for me and these are working out great for practice and space issues I have. If I did complete a painting on this and really loved it - I could put it right into a frame if I wanted. I haven't done that because I like to look through the books and it is an easy way to share some of my work with others and get feedback without having to lug a bunch of framed canvas around.

Nicely structured, solid paper. I am a professional artist, and I often buy unwanted, but nicely framed paintings to create something new- this canvas pad is a great basis for new paintings in an old dress. It is easy to paint on, no need to prime, and it’ll work perfectly with acrylics as well as oil. The colors come out clear and brilliant, and it’s possible to add heavy structure.

I love this product! Have ordered the same one several times! Holds up very well in frames and slip covers! If you live to paint and the convenience of not having bulky canvases to tote around or store than you’ll love these canvas pages!

This canvas pad has a very handy design that makes it convenient to use on the go without needing much workspace or an easel to paint on. The backing of the canvas pad is double-layered black cardboard, meaning it is stiff and sturdy enough to prop the pad against any vertical surface, and not bend inwards or slide off the surface when attacking the canvas with brush strokes. Additionally, one can fold the cover of the pad completely back on itself, so that it is out of the way when painting. The main thing that wasn’t quite to my liking was that the canvas texture, marketed as “medium texture,” is rougher and with a larger grain size than my previous experiences with painting on canvas (admittedly, all my previous experience has been with *stretched* canvas. I bought this pad to try out a more portable/convenient means for painting). Instead of having a smooth cotton texture with fine little dots/pinholes that shine through when held up to the light, this canvas is more like a grid of lizard scales, or a compact tesselation of bumps. The fiber of the canvas is ribbed enough to catch and interfere with your strokes if you’re trying to paint details at a miniature size. You can often get unintentional 'texture' in your work from excess paint getting caught on the ridges, which isn't ideal for painting in miniature when the excess paint shows up as sizeable blobs in comparison. The texture of bumps also still shows through your finished painting when looking up close. If you want to fit multiple figures in your painting given this non-smooth surface, good luck trying to paint delicate human faces smaller than an inch in size. But the texture might be a bonus for you though, if rougher is what you’re looking for. I also found that pencil SMEARS at the touch over this canvas, so I had to sketch my outlines out with a brush and umber or sienna paint instead. Both of these points mean that I wouldn’t really recommend highly detailed work/miniature painting with this, but this canvas pad is otherwise great for practice and for subject material painted at a larger scale. EDIT: I forgot to mention that it is not as easy as you might think to remove a canvas sheet from this pad. You can't just tug the sheet to peel it out of the binding glue like paper pads. Instead, you'll have to use a razor blade to cut through the binding on one or both sides of the sheet, so to free the page from the cover sheet in front and to free from the sheet behind it. I unfortunately damaged and lost a bit of the top edge of my painting on the first page, when trying to slice it out the first time.

I recently purchased the Fredrix 3503 White Canvas Pad and have been extremely impressed with its quality. The canvas is thick and sturdy, and it holds paint beautifully. The 18" x 24" size is perfect for a variety of projects, and the white canvas gives a clean, professional look to my finished pieces. One of the things I appreciate most about this canvas pad is that the pages are perforated, making it easy to remove a canvas from the pad without damaging the rest of the pages. This is especially convenient when working on multiple projects at once, as I can remove a canvas and set it aside without having to worry about it getting wrinkled or smudged. A very cost effective alternative to canvas board. I use for practice painting. Good quality from a good name brand. Also worked in my Canon printer that's a plus.

This canvas is top quality. It is perfect to experiment with the darkness within the use of positive and negative space in paintings. I typically use it with acrylic paints or oil pastels. It works great with both. Quality canvas, decent price. Always arrives on time. This is the second pad of it I've bought in the past year. I love it so much, I ordered my second pad when my first one got down to two pages left. I didn't want to risk going without it. It's inspirational to work with a canvas that's not just primed plain white. Very happy with the product. My only complaint is that you need to be really careful when tearing it off of the pad. Sometimes the string in the canvas gets pulled and messes up the top edge. It happens about 4/10 pages minimum, especially the farther back on the pad you get. I just trim it with scissors when necessary or just burn the pulled strings off with a lighter. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the product. I just wish they would engineer a more easy way to pull it off of the pad without risking damage or bending to the canvas when you pull it off. Handle with care when tearing it off, other than that it's quite tough. Good threat count, high quality canvas.

It is very handy ,especially for acrylic paintings. Very good quality, light weight and durable. Easy to paint on it. I use it for plein air painting.
