I'm sorry to sound silly, but exactly where does the sponge go?? I've never used a machine like this, and the included instructions are terrible!

It goes behind the bit, and extending down into the water reservoir below. It wicks up the water from the water reservoir and carries it against the bit as you grind, so it needs to touch both of them. The glass sludge builds up against the sponge as you work, so you will need to periodically remove the sponge, rinse it out, and then re-insert it.

So i take it the grinder comes with one bit, correct?

It comes with one medium grit bit. Easy to change and the other bits are readily available.

Would this work sanding the edges of reclaimed wine bottle edges after cutting?

I bought this as a gift for my daughter who does stained glass. Here's what she said about using it to smooth the edges of cut glass bottles... "I wouldn't see why not. I've not tried it but would experiment with varying bit grits to find one strong enough to smooth but gentle enough not to chip the glass.'Hope that helps.

Is the Shield beyond the grinder wheel removable?

Yes. there are 2 positions beyond the grinder wheel available for this shield . Or you can remove it completely if you need to grind large pieces of glass.
