It needs to have a active SIM card with a data plan to work. It won't connect to another Wi-Fi. If you have a router that supports USB ethernet then you can use this to provide mobile data to that router.

even though this says hotspot in the name, can I actually use this for internet on my laptop without any kind of wifi router being in the picture? like how some people use their phones as hotspots for their laptops, does this do that? and what do I hae to have or do to…

Yes, you can. I don't know what country you are in, but I believe it will not work in many parts of the US with  T-Mobile because it does not cover the 1700 wavelength. I plug it into the USB port of my laptop and then other people in the house can also receive a wi-fi signal. I find it to be an excellent device and use it with Orange.

Does this Device need Laptop all the times or this can directly be used as a Hotspot were i can use without computer ???

I did not try to use it as a hotspot. I suppose if you had an externally powered USB hub, you could turn it on with the computer then turn the computer off. I used it in Kuwait and had to dial in with PW for my SIM to use it.

Ryan,Sorry for the delay in answering. This modem is really not designed for use in the USA. I have used it on TMobile and it is very slow. You can get Netflix to work, but there are much better options for USA broadband. They all cost more and that is why the Broadband suppliers use strange frequencies - so they can lock you into a contract and their own equipment. That is not the way Broadband works in the rest of the world.
