"As long as humans have been alive, we have drawn." ~Justin Maas Drawing is the most essential of all visual arts. Everyone, from sculptors to painters, draws in one form or another. It is also the simplest and most affordable form of artistic expression. All you need is a pencil and paper to make something magical. But to create a successful portrait, one must understand how to capture a person’s likeness--their spirit--and portray it in graphite. In Drawing Realistic Pencil Portraits , artist and teacher Justin Maas provides a step-by-step guide for both novice and experience portraitists looking to enhance their skillsets. His tried-and-true techniques for mastering the basics and accurately rendering proportion, placement and nuance when drawing the head and face will help you add energy and life to your drawings and create recognizable and moving portraits. In this book: • Lessons in drawing basics, including value, line, shadow, light and anatomy • How to work from both reference photographs and live models, plus tips for selecting your subjects • Step-by-step demos to create crucial features, such as eyes, ears, and hair • Methods for building successful portraits, including the grid method, the tracing method and the author's own Maas method • 15 detailed step-by-step portrait-drawing demos with subjects of different ages, genders and ethnicities • A gallery of additional portrait examples in both black-and-white and full color Review: One of the best for portrait drawing. - Great book for learning portrait drawing! A great learning tool and addition to an artists library. Written by an artist who is extremely talented and great at teaching others. Review: Complete and super effective course on portraiture - - Justin Maas’s online footprint, social media presence and his delectable work had a profound impact on my own work, as on many others, who follow him devoutly. His tutorials are excellent and his approach to drawing, to teaching and to art in general is sensible, practical, accessible and super effective. In this book, he unfolds his entire process and affords ANYONE with the will to learn, to conquer the subject of portraiture with elegance and clarity. This is by far the most comprehensive, and the best learning experience I have had when it comes to drawing - despite the fact that I have been drawing quite a few years before Justin was even born. If you are aspiring to draw or paint portraits, regardless of your current level, this is the book for you. Beyond the excellent lessons, I gained so many insights and pure joy seeing the fantastic reproductions of some of his stellar, now famous, works. Justin also happens to be a humble pleasant and super friendly man, and I am absolutely delighted to add my warmest recommendation. You will love this book - guaranteed.

Great leaning material
This book has a lot of information, and I would say a great start for beginners. The 'Mass method' is accurate and helpful. I am personally working on the Loomis method ATM, which isn't even mentioned in this book.

A Must for those interested in portraiture!
A truly masterful instruction on rendering portraits, this book is wonderful for those just starting out, as well as for those looking to improve their own techniques. Mr. Maas’ methods are fascinating to follow and his end results are are always beautiful, whether they are sketches of “everyday” models or well-known celebrities. He holds no trade secrets back, furnishing helpful details on pencils, paper and other supplies. The instructions and demonstrations are easy to follow, inspiring a desire to spring to the drawing board to try them out! What comes through most strongly however, is the author’s absolute joy in the creative process of rendering light, contrast and values in achieving likenesses in his artwork. Highly recommended!!

Maas method is great
This is a great book that teaches what is called the maas method. It is a mix between grid and freehand and it is excellent. The only drawback is you have to draw the exact size of your reference. The method isnt perfect but it is good. I attached a portrait I did with the maas method. One of the pluses of this book is that is teaches how to draw facial features, accessories and hair. This is great for a beginner artist like me. I recommend this book.

Wonderful book.
Very well laid out. Easy to follow. Beautiful art that looks just like, and is very flattering to the models. Some colour with pastel pencils included. This is just how I want my portrait drawings to look like. No other book will ever be required!
