The Most Complete, Current Guide to Failure Analysis for Cooling Water Systems Fully updated for the latest technologies and techniques, this new edition describes proven procedures for determining the root cause of cooling system failure, correcting the problem, and preventing future occurrences. The first section covers cooling water system design and operation and features ten new chapters on the various materials most commonly found in cooling systems. The remaining four sections discuss waterside corrosion, cracking, mechanical damage, and material and design issues. This authoritative resource explains how to identify failure locations and mechanisms, recognize critical factors influencing failure, carry out inspection procedures, and implement preventive measures to reducedamage. Illustrative case histories are provided in each chapter. The Nalco Guide to Cooling Water Systems Failure Analysis , Second Edition, covers: Carbon and alloy steel Cast iron Stainless steel Copper alloys Aluminum alloys Corrosion-resistant alloys Coatings Nonmetallic materials Brazed and soldered joints Corrosion monitoring Crevice and underdeposit corrosion Oxygen corrosion Biologically influenced corrosion Acid corrosion Alkaline corrosion Galvanic corrosion Dealloying Intergranular corrosion Graphitic corrosion Localized and pitting corrosion Corrosion fatigue Stress corrosion cracking Erosion-corrosion Cavitation Manufacturing defects Weld defects Design and operating conditions Review: Great introduction to corrosion in water systems - Great introduction to corrosion in water systems. But if you are designing water systems, you'll want to dig deeper. Review: Good book. The binding strap that ties a bundle ... - Good book. The binding strap that ties a bundle together made a 1/2 compression pull in book. I bought a light damage for a discount so I guess that's it. Worth the discount.

Covers almost every type of water side failure mechanism.
The second edition is on the whole an excellent update to this book. This book is still excellent value for money, this is a professional book, it is certainly not advertising blurb for NALCO's products. The new chapters in section 1 are the biggest change and provide an much incresed coverage of various metals and materials used in cooling water systems. These chapters will be of use to those who are not primarily metallurgists, or not familiar with other more substantial books such as Shriers Corrosion 4th edition or ASM handbook Vols 13A, 13B and 13C. The most important part of the book to me are sections 2-4 which are similar to the first edition, but updated. This provides an excellent coverage of a very wide range of failure mechanisms in cooling water systems. The strength of this section is its breadth of scope, good quality pictures, and relative conciseness. As you would expect, further reading or consultation with specialists is likely to be required if you need to manage a new problem. The book covers corrosion and damage to the water side of cooling systems, for equipment handling corrosive chemicals the relevant volume of the DECHEMA corrosion handbook would be more relevant, (but a much harder read). My only slight complaint is that the pictures in the second edition, while of good quality by most standards, are not as good as those in the first edition which were exceptionally good.
