The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar (Oxford Quick Reference)

This book is absolutely magnificent! If you are planning on reading those massive books of "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language" and "The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language", you'd better read this entire dictionary first.

This is just what I was looking for. This dictionary is an indispensable resource for ESL teachers, English teachers, linguistics and English majors, SLPs, and anyone with a serious interest in English grammar.

Found this book at the local university book store among ordinary dictionaries. To me, it's a gold mine. Not having read any grammar for some years, I'm delighted to have found an easy accessible dictionary for grammar terminology. I'm using it as a reference book alongside my ordinary grammar books.

Very disappointed. I was looking for a book outlining grammar rules according to the Oxford Dictionary (the best references available.) This book merely lists, in alphabetical order, all of the terms that I imagine grammarians use. Useful to them perhaps, but not to me.

This is a great carry around option as a teaching resource. I was looking for an equivalent to the French ¨Bescherelle¨ however, which is not what this is, but it is a good option as a complement to the more exhaustive but bulky Cambridge (Huddleston and Pullum, 2002) and Pearson (Quirk et al., 2010) combo.

Excellent for those of us who learned it many years ago and need to refresh occasionally. Also, like any dictionary, once you open it you find yourself following threads of things you would never have thought of. I am glad I bought it.

著者の主な著書を一冊ずつ挙げると、B. Aarts (2011) Oxford Modern English Grammar / S. Chalker (1984) Current English Grammar / E. Weiner (1983) The Oxford Miniguide to English Usage, ということになる。これから察せられるように、伝統的な記述文法、学習英文法、語法研究で用いられる用語が中心の文法辞典である。構造言語学、社会言語学、生成文法、発話行為理論、体系機能文法などに関する用語も代表的なものは少数ながら収録されている。しかし、landmark, trajectorなど認知言語学に関する用語はほとんどない。意外な感じがするが、Chomskyan, Firthian, Hallidayan という見出しもある。Chomsky, Firth, Halliday の言語学が一般言語学の枠を超えて広く英文法にまで影響を及ぼしていることをうかがい知ることができる。あちこち拾い読みすると思わぬ収穫が得られる文法辞典である。
