Roman Battle tactics
A good study as to how the early romans were successful in batle. I wargame with ancient Romans and this tactics really do work, if the dice go your way. Well written text and illustrations, recommend this book.

OK. Finally
A book that actually discusses and pictures what we think were Roman battle tactics. Good drawings. Includes both descriptions and drawings of Roman Legion formations starting with the founding of Rome up through the manipular legion, including the Cavalry and skirmish troops. Includes several descriptions of battles. Does not cover siege engines or siege tactics. Recommended.

Sempre formidabili tutte le pubblicazioni della Osprey. Ben documentate, splendidamente illustrate, sono davvero una lettura consigliata ogni volta, e questa non fa eccezione.

A good review of the development of the Roman army from phalanx to the manipular legion. Some interesting discussion about the changes and the adoption of the various weapons. A bit more information about the actual fighting styles would be helpful, although the accounts of different battles does go some way. Lots of nice illustrations. Enjoyed the book.

Osprey have always been a mixed bag when it comes to historical quality, but this volume is of good quality and nicely juxtaposed with the excellent illustrations to allow even a noob like myself to grasp the changes from warband to Polybian legion. This use of the "Show don't tell" technique is an important part of this series: one moves from text, to illustration, to (for many) wargame figures. One can also move in the other direction to cement the key links between historical text and hobby.
