Great and addictive!
I played Gears of War 2 with my friend, and we played the campaign in coop mode (split-screen). It was right about the time Gears of war 3 was released, so since I liked Gears 2 I bought Gears 3. Gears of War 3 is a third person shooter (you can see your character), which allows you to get in cover and when you aim, your character will peek to shoot. This is why I prefer 3rd person shooters over 1st person shooters. Gears 3 have very high playability. You can finish the campaign mode, which has a very good story line (continues from Gears 2 if you have played it). You can play 4 players in the campaign in coop mode. with a split screen for 4 players! The game has interesting approach to weapons, and kills and executions. You can chainsaw some enemies with your assault rifle's bayonet (called the Lancer), plant a grenade in a wall so that it detonate when someone passes by, or even plant a grenade into an enemies body for a grenade execution! When there's a downed enemy, every weapon you carry will have a special execution move! For example, the sniper rifle's execution (called the Long Shot in Gears 3) would brutally hit the downed enemy with the rifle. The game has the following multiplier modes: Versus (competitive play) where you can play as humans (or COGs) and Beasts (or Locusts) Horde (cooperative): As humans, stand by for waves of enemies attacking you. You will need to fortify your position so that they won't get to you easily. Killing enemy gives you more points towards fortification. You can have up to 5 players in this mode. Beast (Cooperative): As beast you will attack a group of humans behind some fortification (kind of like the opposite of horde in a way) Horde is by far the most addictive game mode. It's fun to play online with my friends. I became a "Pathological Horder" In addition to the game, I have also bought the Season Pass for the DLC. This includes new maps (which is what I was interested in the most, since I don't want to not be able to join a friend's game in progress because I don't have that map), and it also have new characters and a 3-hour long campaign mode "RAAM's Shadow", which I didn't really like much (but it added new characters to the game)/ So, This game is well worth the money. I paid for it, and I paid 2400 MSP (about $30) for the season pass to download maps!

Almost as good as gears 2 (edit)
As gears 2 is my 5 for this franchise, this one has to be a 4. I didn't like the story as much, I didn't like losing certain people, and I'd rather fight conventional locust over lambent whatevers. It's neat when they blow up the first few times, but it's ultimately just an annoyance. Other than those few things, this game is among the best in it's class. Would recommend without a doubt. EDIT: I've been achievement hunting and gave this game a thorough second look. I'm changing my rating to a 5 from a 4. Between arcade, versus, and horde this game really does set itself apart from the other games in the series. It never ceases to be a challenge, and maintains form as something I really enjoy plodding through. First, I tried the campaign on insane after finally trying the end all be all gears difficulty on gears: judgement, which was honestly a lot cheaper in how it kills you when it does (A LOT of frags). The story is still engaging to me, the game play is every bit as polished as any you could mention, and beating it was honestly satisfying. It wasn't miserable, and it wasn't easy. It was a firm lesson in strategy and pacing yourself. Great campaign, and arcade mode gives that little bit of competitive edge when playing with friends to really push it over the edge into my top 5 all time favorites. Next thing I tried was versus, where the pace is obviously a bit faster. Granted, there is a firm belief that cheap shotgun blasts to unaware opponents is a skill move, and I'm going to find that to be ridiculous in any game that has that dimension, but it isn't impossible to combat. Otherwise, the versus is engaging and it does seem fairly well balanced. There's not a lot of excessive explosives, there's always a chance of surviving your encounter. It's just a matter of figuring out what it is and if you can come away with a kill in the process. Good stuff. Then I tried horde, which I can only compare to firefight from halo. Waves of enemies that become increasingly difficult through rounds. The only thing about this that I find annoying is leveling up your ability to do things like building barriers or turrets. Obviously this is overcome with a bit of time, but I'm not a fan of giving advantages to players because they played a lot. Even playing fields are the basis of competition. It's a bit ridiculous when you're in a game with someone who pulls out a rocket baring silverback when you're in there trying to lancer a platoon of heavily health boosted grenadiers. Really cod, and not a fan. Last I tried beast mode, which is honestly just tacked on in my opinion. It can be fun to run around as a berserker or corpser, but for the most part, if I play much more of this variant, it'll be for instagib melee mutator and medals if I wind up caring to go for seriously 3.0. All in all, this game is awesome, and if you're into aggressive shooters this is one you shouldn't miss out on. If you're finding it too hard, give it some time, because it's worth it to pick up a little skill in this game. It's made me stronger in the other shooters I play between the recoil and strategy involved. Don't pass on the retro, and learn to play tag.

Gears of War 3 Review
The final chapter has been written, and it is time to once again battle the Locust with Dom, Marcus, and others. Will this finally bring an end to the war, or will humanity fad into the past? Only you will be able to determine that. There is also the very important question of a certain bloodline that seems to meet misfortune at every turn in the series, will this Carmine actually see himself live through the game? Graphically this game looks stunning. I had a chance to play around with some of the multiplayer at PAX, so I did know what to expect. The character designs actually show the wear and tear on the characters as this part of the war has progressed, which personally tells me that a lot of thought went into this game. There's also the new enemies that you'll have to deal with that not only look amazing, but also look a little bit scary (especially when it comes to trying to take them down). There's also the variety of different landscapes that you'll be playing through that not only makes you feel the games progression, but also give you a sense that not everything has to be barren in a war ravaged world. The music has basically stay constant through the series, and that's probably for the best. As the saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", and from the first time I picked up Gears of War I thought the music fit. There's also something to be said about getting the same voice actors to come back and lend their vocals to the series. There was no feelings of who said that, or have I seen you before, I thought I did but you sound different. The controls, I think, are the only piece of the game that regressed for this game. The controls did not feel as snug as they could have been with several issues with having pressed the aim button but having something happen while still holding the aim button, and no longer aiming. I do like the fact that when using the Longshot you are able to keep your zoomed in look when reloading after every shot though. So here you are, probably as Marcus Fenix, unless you are playing co-op. It has come down to this, and it is you who will have to put the final nail in someone's coffin. I'm not exactly sure what else to say about this game. There are going to be some twists in the story, and there are going to be new characters to meet, and you'll get to meet some old one's as well. There will be secrets revealed, battles fought, and a very large body count. You're going to get to play around with some new weapons, and use some of your favorite weapons from the past. This game is going to wrap up some of the biggest questions in the series, but it will also leave you with a couple of extra questions that I guess might be answered with DLC, or perhaps in the books. If you've played the first two games you need this one to find closure. If you're new to the series I recommend starting from the beginning and then playing this game. I think you could probably start straight off with Gears of War 3, but you'll have to watch the quick previously on Gears of War video just so you get a little background. They definitely made multiplayer feel more fleshed out and give you a leveling up system to unlock characters and other goodies. Bottom line this is a very good third person shooter, and though it doesn't match up in some regards to its predecessors, this is still something that must be added to your collection. This game gets an 8.9 out of 10.

Excellent End to a Great Series
For those who don't have much time to read this: I would highly recommend this game. And if you are a fan of the series, you really should play this game. The level design is great, writing has improved, gameplay is relatively unchanged (good if you like it, and bad if you don't), and the ending is a satisfying conclusion to an overall great series. More in-depth review here: I have been a fan of the 'Gears of War' series since the first game was released, so I'll try to be as unbiased as possible. When I heard that 'Gears 3' was coming out, I was really excited to play it...but I never bought it (something about never having enough cash lying around or free time to play). I never heard any reviews about the game one way or another, so it was never on the top of my list of games to play. Well, a few weeks ago, I saw 'Gears 3' for sale on Amazon (only $15!) and that excitement to play came back. Still without sufficient time to immerse myself in the game, I figured it would be a project for me, play a level every night or so when I have some spare time...nothing ever seems to go as planned. I started to play this game and I couldn't stop. I loved everything about it. From the tutorial level (which takes place in a dream of Marcus Fenix) until the very end, I was taken aback by the beauty of the level design. I think this game does a good job of showing what the war has done to the planet. You get to see a lot more of the environment, and in some cases, the developers even seem to be showing off what they have done (I would too, they did a really good job with the art here). One problem a lot of people have with the series is the writing. Still not as good of a script as other games, like the 'Mass Effect' series, 'Gears 3' still shows improvement over the previous games in the series. There were moments in the game which really make you connect with the characters, something I thought was lacking in the previous games but is present here. By the end of the game, I could put myself in that environment and feel what it would be like to be in the position of the CoGs, something I like to see in video games because it shows the ability of the developers to use the medium to tell stories, just like movies and artwork. The gameplay, which is what has made this series popular, remains relatively unchanged. This is definitely a good thing. I don't have much else to say about this, if you like the gameplay, you'll like it here. If not, well, at least you know what to expect. The main reason I bought this game was because I wanted to see how everything was going to end. I've played a lot of series through to the end and a lot of them end in a completely different manner than what I would have liked to see. Considering the tone of the past games, the ending of 'Gears 3' fits perfectly. **Semi-Spoiler Alert: Skip to the next paragraph if you don't want to know ANYTHING about the end of the game** Even though the ending is not the most uplifting way for the series to end, it is exactly how I would want this series to finish, which I can't say about a lot of other series. Overall, I think the main strengths of this game are its Level Design/Artwork, Gameplay (since I am a fan of how 'Gears' does it), and Story. For weaknesses, if I have to pick, I would say Character Development (of course the entire series had mediocre character development, so I wasn't expecting much. On the other hand, this game has better character development than the previous 2). If you chose to buy this game, you won't be disappointed. Oh, I forgot to mention this: the "shock value" for this series has always been the gore. This one is no different. There always seem to be new ways go around and neutralize the enemy, hence the Mature (M) ESRB rating.

At least there were stickers!
So I have had this game for at least 8 hours and I feel like I can write a pretty insightful review now #sarcasm I have been reading a lot of reviews that bash on this title for not really having anything new or innovative. Well what did you really expect? When I hear sequel i think minor tweaks, new or continued story, and some new content. But everything is built on the foundation of the previous games. If they were to deliver a whole new experience, or anything too different from 1 & 2 I would have hated this game. In fact that has happened several times (especially with remakes) and the majority that I played were just bad and had me wishing to play to first games. I have gotten to play half of the single player, horde mode up to 20, and a bunch of MP matches in TD and Warzone. Single player is what you expect. Pretty good story, 4 player co-op, damn fun, but don't buy the game for that. What I really play Gears for is the multiplayer. With more polish that the first 2 and a few new moves, MP really shines and solidifies this series as my all time favorite. If you have never played a Gears game and you're tired of FPS games and you need something new I would highly recommend this. Even if you are terrible at the MP you can jump into Horde and Beast mode for hours of fun. There were only a few things that I have been disappointed with thus far. The first thing is the pitiful manual that comes with the game. It is literally not even 1 page long, its basically a dust cover for a manual. Made me question if Gears was giving away free On-Live passes on every page so Amazon had to pull it out. I remember when there used to be a wealth of info in the user manuals that came with games. Even some bonus swag! What do I read on the toilet now between matches! But they game me stickers, woot! The second thing that I found disappointing (and this is actually a gameplay issue) is the overuse of shotguns. This is still "Shotgun the Game 3" or "Shotguns of War 3" with 90% of my kills and deaths coming from one of the 2 shotguns (why, oh why did they decide to add another one). I was hoping that they would tone down this for Gears 3, but they kind of just put it into overdrive. Most people will gripe about this (so I will too) and it is a legitimate complaint for any gamer to say that 1 weapon is so powerful that there is no real use for the other weapons. This is normally only true of single player games though and is usually corrected for multiplayer centric games.

too amazing to describe
This game really has it all. It has a long story campaign to play. Lots and lots of different different game modes to suit anyone's tastes. This game fits anyone's skill level. Whether you're a beginner or a lethal gearhead, you'll find a place in this game. For all those people who are intimidated by the elite human gamers and who are slaughtered in games like Modern Warfare or Battlefield, Gears offers Horde mode, Beast mode, co-op mode (in both story and other game modes), and bots in any multiplayer mode. In all these modes, you play alongside your human friends to survive against the computer players. It's really an all-for-one, one-for-all mentality and it's a great time for all. If you're a stud, you can reign death on the enemies while protecting your friends while if you're inexperienced, you can still dish out damage while under protection of your friends. The ability to have bots in any multiplayer mode also allows you to learn how to play these modes without the same duress as facing human players. Very few games allow bots in multiplayer matches but Gears does. Then when you're ready to venture out to the bloody battlefields, you'll feel more prepared. Also, it is very easy for your friends to drop in and out of the game at any time. A great thing is host migration now exists so if the host quits out of the game, players are no longer dumped to the lobby. It migrates to another host so that everyone can keep gaming. There is just so much content and variety in this game. The sheer amount of content makes this game feel so much larger than other shooters. No 6-hour campaign and a handful of game modes in Gears! The graphics are just beautiful. Screenshots and Youtube do not do this game justice. When you're on a night map, you look up at the sky with the moon beaming soft moonlight through the church tressel. Beautiful. When you're on a dusty map and the sand storm starts to roll in which you can see coming from the distance and then which envelops you in blinding dust. Amazing. Very few games have the same intensity as Gears. The guns feel meaty, sound lethal, and deal damage that'll make you squeal and wince.

Delivers on every level
I was not a huge fan of the part 1 and 2 of the series. I liked them but felt they were overhyped. This game is amazing and deserves all the hype its getting. I am halfway through the campaign and about 18 hours deep in online play. So far the campaign is easily the best in the series and very entertaining and varied. The characters while pretty memorable from the first two games were not very much more than cardboard cutouts. In this game the characters have a little more depth and you get some pretty interesting backstory on them. I have not been able to enjoy campaign co-op yet but imagine it will be a blast this time 4 players can co-op in the campaign, and awesome upgrade from the first two games. I was not expecting to love the multiplayer, but so far it has been flawless, except for one small prob. Team Deathmatch and King of the Hill which is basically capture the flag are both well executed here because of the amazing weapon balancing and awesome map designs. There has not been one time when I felt like I got killed by some cheap tactic that the other player was exploiting so far the game has been extremely fun and fair the shot guns are deadly at close range but the lancers are also deadly at distance. I did not participate in the beta but it looks like Epic did and awesome job utilizing feedback they got from it. Horde 2.0 and Beast Mode are awesome as well with beast mode being a reverse Horde where you play as locust. Beast mode is not really quite as deep as horde mode in terms of tactics but it's a fun mode. Horde 2.0 is the same mode from the last game with some awesome updates like command posts that you buy defenses for with cash you accumulate by killing locust in a round. Also every 10th round there are bosses in part of the horde making it very challenging. It is deeper and more challenging than before. Also the sheer amount of different types of enemies is awesome it seems like every time I play there is a new enemy type. . The one small issue I have so far is it seems like there is slow matchmaking in Beast and Horde mode. Prob just cause its launch week though no big deal. I cant say enough about this game and how awesome it is. This game is not a hyped game that will disappoint. This has an awesome campaign so far and a multiplayer that seems to have been tested and tweeked to perfection by Epic. Buy this now if you have a 360.

This is what's wrong with the movie and video game industries these days.
I'll preface this review by admitting that I'm a bit of a sci-fi cynic, and a pretty tough customer. That being said, I think my critiques are generally within reason, accurate and fair - I simply have high expectations for things. I really felt like I had to speak up about this game, as I was a bit sorry that I bought it in the end. Story Mode - If you read no other sentence in this review, remember the following one: the biggest problem with the STORY mode of this game, is that it has no sense of PACING. Essentially, it boils down to the following: 1) watch a cut scene 2) shoot (mostly) the same 5 or 6 enemies, while walking thru very predictable, linear environments (a never ending series of hallways/rock mazes for some reason) to get to your objective, 3) reach your objective, begin to craft/mold/tell the story of some potentially interesting, deep characters 4) badguys show up!! time to shoot again!! 5) fight a boss that jumps up and growls at you 6) go back to step 1) about 5 or 6 times The problem I had with this game was that it comes off as very much, the same type of crap we've been seeing in movies/video games for like the last 10 years. Aliens/monsters/undead/trolls jump up out of the ocean or cave or something and growl at you for some reason (seriously count it, I think this exact same, rehashed scene occurs about 6-7 times in this game alone), and you shoot it to death. But what REALLY BUGGED ME, was that just as the game starts to get good/on a role with something, (there are actually one or two REALLY GOOD scenes), some monsters show up for some reason and you have to "hold them off" while someone gets gas or opens a door or does something dumb. It's frustrating. In the end the only character that ends up getting any real development goes away, and all that's left are these very bland, cliche marine type husks of personalities. Another note is that some of the boss battles just go on endlessly and are very tedious. I had to play the end boss about 10 times through (and trust me it is a LONG encounter), because some random dude would flank me because I was bored repeating the same sequence. Of course this is brought on by the fact that you can't die, because apparently all it takes to heal gunshot wounds, huge spider claws in your face, or laser cannon blasts from huge bugs, is for your marine friend to come over and pick you up and give some encouraging "dig deep solider" sort of words! Multiplayer Mode - I'll sum it up for you in just one word: SHOTGUNS!!!!! Boy did the power of shotguns (coupled with the duck and cover system) essentially reduce a potentially enjoyable multiplayer experience to a cheap, and simple bore, that will pretty much make you sick of it after a match or two. Basically your character has the extreme endurance to duck and roll endlessly right up to you (within shotgun range) and pull the trigger once or twice, while you blast them to within an inch of their life with your puny lancer. The duck and cover system is actually really fun and good in this game (it's pretty enjoyable in 1P), but you'll never get to use it to do anything intelligent, because in the end it's a lot easier for someone to run up and shotgun you than use any other weapon. Shotguns seriously account for like 70% of kills in the game. There are of course tactics you can use to increase your odds (see below), but the fact that you have to do this JUST TO PLAY THE GAME, to me, renders it silly and not worth the effort. In the end I sold this game after about a month.. I wish I had rented it instead. Tips for killing guys who only use shotguns (without using one yourself): * Use the lancer, always. Don't ever use the retro lancer (unless you prefer it to shoot with) * Use sound to your advantage. When you hear someone behind a corner or a piece of cover you are on, get ready for them to jump out from behind it. Just as they do, rev up your chainsaw bayonette and move INTO them. Sometimes this gets you shotgunned by one of their teammates, but it will get you a 1 to 1 k/d ratio, and hopefully it crushes the shotgunner's spirits, if nothing else ;) * In open terrain, when you spot a guy running towards you, attempt to gun them down with the lancer before they reach you. If they make it to your cover piece, use tip 1). * if you see one of your teammates in a "duck and roll shotgun fun time, lets see who happens to get lucky first," type of battle, sit back and shoot your lancer at the enemy. Some of the most fun I've had in this game is getting 7x kill streaks off of tools who will only use the shotgun. That's all I got. RENT DONT BUY.

Great game
This is an English version of the game, comes with gears of war 3 stickers and a Japanese instruction page. I thought the manual could be better done and more detailed, but what's included is basically a black-and-white instruction sheet. This game is an epic end to the Gears of War saga, with about 8 hrs of single player campaign and many more hours of multiplayer gameplay. Definitely recommended.
