Excellent little grinder - checks all the boxes
I bought this grinder with some trepidation because the first several reviews were quite negative. I'm glad I bought it because it is proving to be a star. I use it for a range of things - hard legumes and spices, including Indian spices, seeds, softer spices, breadcrumbs, etc. I've occasionally used it with wet grinding of pastes (ginger, garlic, chutneys, etc) if it's not too runny. It has several unique features that are difficult to find in a grinder this size: - Its size is just right - small enough to grind small quantities of things like spices without having a huge leftover to store for weeks; large enough that you don't need too many rounds when grinding larger quantities - Blade design seems efficient. It seems to completely pulverize anything I put in it (including hard spices) in a small fraction of the time it takes for other grinders (like coffee grinders). It does this so fast that the motor has never been even close to overheating. And it seems to work well always - I haven't yet discovered anything it won't grind well - So far, its longevity is good (about 8 months) - it has lasted longer than all of the highly rated coffee grinders I tried to use for these purposes - Cleanup is trivial. The importance of this is hard to overstate. Other grinders such as coffee grinders claim easy cleanup but this is an order of magnitude better. You can simply take the bowl and lid off completely and put them in the dishwasher and they will come out fully clean. No more fiddling with brushes etc. to try to remove the bits and residues of spices that are left in the fixed bowls of other grinders. The only concerns so far: - The lid has a rubber ring that seems necessary for a good seal; if that is missing some of the spice/ground material might escape the bowl during grinding. The rubber ring is not small, but it's easy to lose in the dishwasher etc. if not careful - Wet grinding seems a bit risky. The bowl can allow liquid to escape through the bottom and this could possibly enter the motor casing and damage the motor (though this hasn't happened to me so far). So this may not be suitable for wet grinding and isn't quite like a miniature full-featured grinder, which is what is really needed. Pretty glad to have found this after trying to use coffee grinders as spice grinders for several years with limited success.

Works well for chia seeds
I bought this primarily to grind chia seeds to drink with water, and this is working great. I'll grind 1-2 tablespoons for a few seconds to get the seeds broken up. I haven't tried grinding for too long as I don't want to end up with an oily mix. Just breaking the shells is all you really need for blooming/drinking chia seeds. The ground chia seeds pour out easily from the blender cup, and the cup/cap wash easily with a swift rinse. The motor is also surprisingly not loud. It's low-pitched and not an irritating sound at all. Much quieter than a blender. This has been low-maintenance and easy to use everyday. Would recommend this for anyone wanting to grind chia seeds.

The BEST spice grinder out there!
I have owned this grinder since March 2023. I have purchased many different brands of spice grinders over the years, in search of the most efficient one. Krups offered the best performance of all the others I have tried, until now. I can't overstate enough that this Cuisinart outshines all others. I LOVE that the container is large enough to grind big batches. It will grind way more at a time than the others, and do a better job,...grinding flawlessly. There is no need to pick it up and shake it to get spices to fall over the blades. All the parts above the motor can go in the dishwasher. The only thing I have to clean manually sometimes is to brush out the dust on top of the motor. With the others, I always had to put rice in them to clean them, and odors remained after cleaning. It took longer to clean them than it did to grind the spices. It does have a storage compartment for the cord, but I have found it to be a struggle and time-consuming to push back in and it feels like I might damage the cord, so I just wrap the cord around the motor and secure the plug part for storage. They could use some improvement with that situation... Still, I give this one 5+ stars and will purchase another when this one konks out. (within reason) Highly, highly recommended!

Good for basic grinding needs
This grinder works well for everyday use like spices, coffee beans, and small amounts of nuts. It’s compact, easy to operate, and doesn’t take up much counter space. The grinding is fairly even as long as you don’t overload it, and it’s quick for small batches. Cleaning is manageable, though you do need to be a bit careful around the blade area. It’s not meant for heavy-duty grinding or large quantities, but for basic kitchen needs, it does the job well. Overall, a solid and reliable grinder with good value.

Can't live without it!
I bought one of these spice grinders about 1 1/2 years ago when a I was making a recipe for chili which stongly suggested making fresh chili powder instead of the store-bought kind. The difference in the flavor was UNBELIEVABLE! From that moment on, I have been on a crusade to freshly grind all my own spices. My culinary prowess has taken a real leap forward--especially with something like apple pie. I get rave reviews on just about everything I make with the freshly-ground spices. The flavors just jump out at you! I find the machine is easy to use, does a great job and is very easy to clean. The bowl detaches and can be put in the dish washer. I do not put the cover in the dish washer, because I found that the little silicone sealing ring tends to pop out. Now to my confession: I'm always doing things waaaaaaay too fast, so recently I grabbed the grinder to move it, forgetting to unplug it, and Voila! it went flying, and the bowl broke. This was totally my fault. So I ordered a new one (it couldn't arrive fast enough!). Now I have a spare motor/base and cover. One other thing: I have been getting my whole spices and herbs on-line from Spice Barn. The quality is fabulous and prices are incredibly low. The whole spices last a very long time if kept in the sealed bag and out of the light. It turns out to be much less expensive than buying those little jars, which by the way, go stale almost immediately. Go ahead, check your spices. Is your cinnamon 5 years old? Happy grinding!

DON'T BUY - Manufacturing Defect with Loose Blade Assembly Since 2018!
First time I used this grinder, powder leaked between loose blade assembly into area underneath removable metal cup, getting powder everywhere. After cleaning up mess, noticed blade assembly was loosely attached and wobbly without good seal to removable cup which loose blade assembly is what allows dust to go below. Only used it once and after seeing there was no way to tighten blade assembly sent it back. Then reading reviews here going back to 2018 it is clear this is a manufacturing defect Cuisinart has never remedied. Serial Number on my unit was for year 2020. I called Cuisinart and they offered no solution nor apology for the defect. No doubt the many problems people have had with this unit over the years (see reviews) are due to this loose blade assembly. After some time if you are not removing the 'removable cup' and powder is building up under the cup (which you can't see unless you remove) - this powder will build up below and one problem could be not being able to remove the 'removable cup', another could be dust getting into housing and gumming up the motor & burning it out. And lastly, it did not grind well at all. I wanted a fine grind for spices but the best it did was course. Also the unit is not 'heavy or solid' like advertised. WARNING: Don't buy - but if you do... check for tight blade assembly before you use - if it's loose it is not going to preform well and best to return ASAP and leave appropriate feedback so others don't have to go through this... Thank you. Shame on Amazon and all the reviewers here and in Internet that said this was one of the best performing grinders. Reminds me to read negative reviews every time I buy something as the way Amazon feedbacks work the products commonly have 4-5 star ratings even product is crap! Below I've copied user feedbacks which most commonly appear: "This version, as others have stated, is not sealed (i.e. the blade assembly is loosely attached, allowing spices to slip between the blade assembly and the metal housing, getting powder everywhere)." "After just a few uses, can no longer detach cup from base for a thorough wash." "Chops very well, but leaves quite a bit of powdered spice around the inside of the grinder, not in the cup. I expected a much better "seal" between the cup and the body of the grinder." "It doesn’t grind consistently. There are some that get ground coarse and some fine." "This is the 3rd time I’ve used it and it simply stopped working."

This beats a blade coffee grinder for utility and cleaning
It's so nice to take it apart to clean it, unlike a blade coffee grinder. It was a really useful purchase for me.

Excellent grinder!!!!! After 1 and 1/2 years still five Stars!!!!!!!!!! OK. More than 6 YEARS and I still have the same grinder
This grinder does everything I expected it to. I grind cinnamon, nutmeg, and does a GREAT jod with flax seed! You will get your money's worth with this little jewel. I've heard negative things about this item. As with any grinder, blender, or processor, you must take caution and use common sense as to how you use the item. When the motor acts like it is having a hard time ...., back off and let it rest. If for instance, you are trying to make butter from almonds, this product is not what you want. The resistance on the motor caused from the oil can cause the motor to overheat and destroy the product. THIS IS A GREAT PRODUCT IF YOUN DON'T ABUSE IT AND USE IT IMPROPERLY. This is an update. It is August 19 2012, so I have had my grinder for almost 1 1/2 years and I wrote the above review on March 17 2011. I am still using my originally purchased Quisinart Spice and Nut grinder with NO problems. I did purchase one for a relative and they tried grinding coffee and on the first try, they burned the motor out. Upon inquiry, I found they just held the lid on to make it try to grind when the blade was obviously stopped by a bean that got stuck between the blade and holding cup (Any size motor will burn out if you do this) I've had the blade stop on me and immediately know to stop the machine. I have had this happen to me at least a half dozen times. As long as you turn the machine off and loosen the nut or bean or other obstacle turn the machine back on and it will work fine. I grind many dozens of herbs and spices as I now purchase all of my spices and herbs whole. The machine is FINE. The user may be broken as they may not understand physics. I use my grinder at least once/day. I still give this grinder five stars!!!!!!
