Looking for a vise to clean both my full size M1A a and a ar15. Will this work to clean the ar15 in the hinged open position.?

Yes, but you will still need a cleaning link tool to keep rifle in the open position. The gun vise clamp does not have enough gripping power to hold rifle open in the hinged open position due to the thick foam cushion.

for this price is the best bang for its buck? im looking to get my first gun vise and not sure what to get.

Depending on the firearm you're going to be using this with, it could prove to be the best option. It is heavy and works well for holding long guns.

Will this vise work with wide modular type butt stock

The vise opens up to 2.75 inches possibly a little more. That measurement is at the top of the vise. It narrows as it goes down.
