It’s a red pencil
I got these to let the students use from time to time. The lead seems a bit soft but I am not familiar with using red lead so this may be normal. However, it breaks very easily. I tell them to write gently.

I use these to mark lumber ,color stands out . Lead could be a little harder but these work

The lead doesn’t easily transfer to paper
The lead seems to be coated in wax which prevents a graphite like transfer to paper. If the paper is somewhat slick, it is even more difficult to transfer. It could be that the color is not a good mix agent with graphite, but I was expecting better results.

Unsatisfactory
The red is not bright enough to read easily. It needs to be deeper and darker. Even on white paper it is hard to read. The pencils are of not much use if I can't see the marks.

Pretty good
Not as good as the red pencils I used to use for marking papers with "F-" but quite adequate for underlining on most non-glossy paper.
