The problem is standard alkaline-cell LR44s last a very short time in them. SR44Ws or 357 cells are silver-oxide batteries, so their discharge curve is much flatter, holding a higher voltage longer than the LR44s. This means they last much longer in my calipers. They cost more than the alkaline cells, but are more than worth it for the longer life and reduced inconvenience of constant battery replacement. That said, I don't trust Chinese-made versions; I've had bad results with some of them. Renata is a Swiss company, and I've found them to be consistently reliable. (Pro tip if you have big bucks: Cheap Chinese calipers, height gauges, etc draw current even when the display is off, so they drain their batteries even if you aren't using them. In contrast, Mitutoyos; actually *are* off when you turn them off so batteries last many, many times longer in them.
