Secure enough for what they are meant to do. You don't want to scale a mountain with them but they will hold a decent amount of weight ie: grow light. **Q: How short do these go?** A: About 6 - 8 inches fully retracted **Q: Can I use just one cord to hang an outdoor plant, and do these work as a pulley?** A: They do work as a pulley. Holding a plant? It would depend on the weight. **Q: Can hold a canopy?** A: Each one can hold 75 pounds, so, all four used together would hold 300 pounds. They are made to suspend things. I suppose you could tie things down.
