Why get it? Was it on sale or a huge promotional package like a nice balanced rod combo? Or perhaps the 7000/7500 seems a lot smaller. Truth is, it’s not really noticeably smaller but it does have less line capacity than the 8000/8500 and we all want more spool capacity. It’s like getting a Big Mac meal and turning down the included soda. Seriously, either drop off to the 6000/6500 or jump up to the 8000/8500. The weight and size are within a few grams and millimeters. The prices are the same. Do yourself a favor if you’re considering the 7000/7500, get the 8000/8500 for the larger spool. Also the resale is better for the 8000/8500. I’m not specially referring to Daiwa spinners. **Q: Would the 4000 be well suited for a surf setup? Or should I go bigger?** A: Depends what kind of surf set up. For East Coast surf fishing where you’re using a 12’+ rod, lots of weight and bait, you probably want a bigger reel to match your setup. Even the next size up — tHe 4500 — has significantly more line capacity and drag. I think the 4000 is perfect for surf fishing on the West Coast. I use a BG4000 with about 250 yds of 40 lb PowerPro Max Cuatro on a ML 8’6” rod.
