Review: XTOOL IP500-TLS Toyota/Lexus 2026 Scanner at OBD II Price Point - Summary: Purchased as low $ cost, value-based DIY Toyota 2026 4Runner I-Force Max hybrid bi-directional scanner. Research landed IP500-TLS capabilities incl new protocol hybrid. VERY pleased 1st impression: arrived fully charged 93%; tablet solid-built 5-inch color touch display bright, sharp, works 9 MIL glove. Icons/menus organized, logical, intuitive w/fast processor. Setup easy Wi-Fi connect; created XTOOL acct, register, automatic SW update. ALSO, NO subscription fee, lifetime update, 2yr warranty. Again, bi-directional function, diagnostic codes. See XTOOLonline.com. Cust spt A+, all Qs answered. Excellent DIY Scanner for New Toyota/Lexus Hybrid Platforms As a DIY vehicle owner, I've gradually moved beyond basic code readers and wanted something with bidirectional controls and deeper diagnostic capability. After purchasing a 2026 Toyota 4Runner Limited i-Force Max hybrid, I discovered that my previous scanner could not properly support the newer Toyota communication protocols. After a lot of research, I landed on the XTOOL IP500-TLS, and so far I've been very impressed. I've included photos and a short video showing the scanner, packaging, startup process, and overall user interface so prospective buyers can see exactly what to expect. First Impressions The IP500-TLS arrived in professional, well-protected packaging. The unit was nearly fully charged out of the box and quickly reached 100% using the included USB-C cable. The tablet itself feels solid and well-built. The 5-inch display is bright, sharp, touch works with 9 MIL gloves and easy to read both indoors and in a garage environment. Icons are intuitive, menus are organized logically, and screen responsiveness is fast. Device interfaces: 5-inch Touch Screen, Power Button, VGA15PIN-Port, Type-C Port, Memory card slot. Setup Experience Setup was straightforward: • Connected to Wi-Fi just like any other smart device • Created an XTOOL account • Registered the device • Downloaded software updates The scanner automatically identified required updates and guided me through the installation process. I highly recommend spending a few minutes reading the included instructions and completing setup before connecting to a vehicle. When I connected the IP500-TLS to my 2026 4Runner, it automatically detected and decoded the VIN during Auto Scan with no issues. Why I Chose the IP500-TLS For Toyota and Lexus owners, support for newer communication protocols is becoming increasingly important. Many older scanners and budget code readers struggle with newer vehicle architectures. One of the reasons I selected this model was its focus on Toyota, Lexus, and Scion coverage, including support for newer hybrid vehicles. I initially looked at more expensive alternatives from other manufacturers, but the IP500-TLS offered an attractive balance of capability and affordability. Other factors that influenced my decision: • No subscription fees • Lifetime software updates • Two-year warranty • Bidirectional control functions • Advanced diagnostic capability beyond basic code reading Documentation and Support I also reviewed the IP500-TLS user manual available through XTOOL's website. The documentation is surprisingly well organized and easy to follow. It walks users through configuration, diagnostics, and common functions without excessive filler content. Customer support has also been excellent. Every question I've submitted has received a response. Keep in mind that support is based in China, so U.S. customers may receive replies overnight rather than during normal business hours. Areas for Improvement My main suggestion would be the addition of AI-assisted diagnostics. Some newer and more expensive scanners are beginning to provide AI-powered explanations and troubleshooting assistance. While this doesn't affect the core functionality of the IP500-TLS, it would be a valuable addition for DIY users trying to interpret diagnostic results and repair decisions. Final Verdict If you're a Toyota, Lexus, or Scion owner looking for an affordable diagnostic scanner with bidirectional capabilities, especially for newer vehicles and hybrids, the XTOOL IP500-TLS deserves serious consideration. The hardware is well-built, setup is easy, updates are straightforward, and the feature set is impressive for the price. For DIY enthusiasts who want more than a basic code reader but don't want to spend professional-shop money, this scanner hits a sweet spot.
Review: Excellent product for this price and with bi-directional features! - Why did you pick this product vs others?: My family and I currently have 3 Toyota products, including a Lexus GX-470, an Lexus LS-430 and a Toyota Avalon. I provide 99% of my auto maintenance and repair work and have been doing so for many years. I have used several scan tools over the years, from those with advanced programming and coding to scanners that are designed to provide more basic features to assist in identifying, troubleshooting and resolving issues. Some tools provide universal coverage, while others are focused on specific manufacturers. One of the benefits of having a tool that is specific to your vehicle is that it is focused on manufacturer specific diagnostics and thus provides better and more complete coverage. I had several main criteria that I was looking to meet when searching for a new OBD-2 scanner. One criterion included that it is manufacturer specific. Another was that it be compact, as I needed a tool that could fit in my glove box or hidden in some other inconspicuous area. I also needed it to be rugged and well built, not flimsy and light-weight like many of the products I see listed online. It was also important that it be well supported and provide cost-free updates. This is a lot of criteria I know, but the IP500 was one of very few options, and perhaps the only option at the time of my investigation that met all these criteria. It's important to understand what these tools are, and to be clear on technical expectations and limitations. The goal here for this tool is to provide in-depth information and to assist with diagnosing vehicle specific problems related to emissions and other manufacturer specific features. This is where I found this tool to be helpful. I did not expect to find a tool at this price point that would also provide bi-directional features, but I am very happy to discover that it offers this feature as well. I decided to immediate use on two vehicles. The first use was on the Toyota Avalon. For this I wanted to see if it would pick up a simple but common issue. I decided to test the functionality of the Mass Air Flow Sensor to see if the scanner would correctly identify an issue. For this test, I unplugged the sensor and started the engine. Of course, a check engine light appeared, as expected. I then connected the (IP500), and ran an auto-scan, which correctly identified the vehicle and model, along with the VIN number. So far so good. I then scanned the vehicle. The IP500 correctly identified the problem which triggers several codes, including a (permanent) code for the MAF sensor circuit. I then cleared the codes and rescanned but initially found that the “permanent” code would not clear. A quick search using the scanners diagnostic look-up feature, confirmed that once a permanent code is triggered, it cannot be immediately deactivated by (any) scanner. The IP-500 did exactly what it was supposed to do. This issue needed to be resolved by driving the vehicle for several cycles to inform the vehicles (ECU) the issue was resolved, which would then deactivate the code. The ECM needed proof that the problem was resolved! The sensor needed to report data through the proper channels of communication! Also, this was a hidden code, and no check engine light appeared, so this was all happening in the background. I later confirmed that the code had been cleared by re-scanning the vehicle. This is an example where someone might have easily mistakenly expected the scanner to clear the code and how you must also use a basic understanding of how these systems work. The great thing was that the IP500 listed the code as being (permanent), which gave me a clue on why the code would not clear. I just needed to confirm it via Google. I learned something during this experience regarding how “permanent” codes work. My second test was on a 2008 Lexus GX470. For this I decided to disconnect one of the ignition modules. Of course, this would also immediately trigger a check engine light as it would prevent one of the spark plugs from firing! I then scanned the vehicle and once again I received not one but several codes (Toyotas always throw multiple codes). I then reconnected the ignition module and restarted the vehicle to let it run for a few minutes to clear its brain and smooth out the rough idling. Next, I turned the vehicle off and then turned the ignition (key) switch to the proper position to rescan and clear the codes. The process worked like a charm and all codes were immediately cleared as I had hoped. In addition, this tool has some great features, including that it allows you to both save an email the diagnostic reports to be printed or saved on an external device as well. It also has a search option which provides details on what the codes mean and common issues. Essentially it has a built-in search engine to the internet. These are but a few of the benefits that I found. I can also add that the support team is very responsive and open to questions. I found them to be very helpful. I would highly recommend this product for basic to advanced troubleshooting and repair.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2006 Lexus GS300 approved
*by T***A on July 20, 2026*

Try 2B brief: Ordered yesterday, got today. Bat was 0. Immediately charged for hr because I had to test. Read the reviews and there were incompatibility issues, so I was prepared to return. At 85% powered on. Had 2 register. Put in Wifi. Then signed up. Had 4 updates chose 2. Updated for Lexus. (I have the 2006 GS300, bought used that had an accident.) Updates took 3 seconds each. Plugged into the OBD2 port and it took about 60 seconds to read data. It scanned the vehicle and I was blown away! It gave me so much good info. It read all the codes. Which TPMS were bad (3 out of 4). The O2 sensors. The codes for the parts I replaced, battery condition, codes for the sunroof that I had to fix! Basically everything I knew what was wrong, it told me, and I could clear those codes. And all the other things I suspected (I left the codes remain until I fix them) and 3 that I did not know there was an issue. So this freaking thing is great! It feels good in the hand, I like the rubber bumper corners. Feels solid like if I drop it, then it is safe. And at the price I am so happy! I have pix! You can see it, the photo on my lap, also reads the battery when plugged in.
