My previous experiences with mess kits involved lightweight, cheap aluminum mess kits that allowed food to burn to the bottom and stain the pans. These mess kits were a totally different experience. Yes, they are a little larger and heavier than the old-school aluminum kits. However, I took advantage of the extra room in the kits to include a few extra items like a can opener and a plastic spork. I also wrapped a cloth around the pan grabber (as another reviewer had suggested) to keep the grabber from clanking around and to double as a pot holder. I did not expect the non-stick surface to work as well as it did. We cooked all sorts of things in these kits -- powdered eggs, chili, etc. -- and the kits cleaned up perfectly every time. Even the scouts' mess kits looked like new at the end of the trip. It was nice to have a deep enough pan to warm or steam food, along with a lid to keep the steam in. The scouts used them over sterno stoves, propane/butane stoves, and even over the campfire, and these pans held up just fine. You do have to be careful not to use metal utensils, because the nonstick surface (as in any pan) will scratch. The measuring marks in the cup were extremely useful for mixing all sorts of foods. One of the bowls arrived cracked, but desertcart quickly replaced the whole mess kit. Overall, this was a very good value for what we paid -- REI sells the exact same thing, rebranded, for double the price. I expect the scouts will get many good years of use out of these kits. Review: Good starter mess kit - I bought this mess kit to replace my old 'aluminum' kit from when I was a Boy Scout. This one is made of a good quality material and has a non stick coating on the inside. I like the included mess sack to keep everything together and the elastic band to hold the top and bottom pans together. My only issue is that after using the kit for a few outings I have noticed that the plastic bowl which is stored inside the two pans is starting to leave a faint wear mark on the non-stick finish. I guess it is from the bowl moving around inside the two pans. I will probably put a paper towel inside to act as a cushion. Other than that it is a great little set. I can't believe I waited so long to upgrade from my old kit. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a great little kit *by W***C on February 25, 2015* This is a great little kit, however the "teflon" coating is kind of cheesy. The pans are quite easy to deform, so over heating will warp/bend the metal. Take great care packing these together because the cover will wear the coating off quickly (I use a washcloth inside to pack it). Little pricy for what you get but it's large enough for outback "baking" the packaged muffin mixes using the "tin foil insert" method (check youtube if you don't understand that). This is a bit on the heavy side for backpacking, but I prefer to have pans instead of just a cook cup/pot when I do long term camping. Nothing beats a fry pan. I don't use the bowl or cup and the handle weighs as much as the pots, so you may consider an alternative to the included handle. Having said that, the handle is nice to grab the pans with. I carry pill containers full of spices and such to take up the spare space inside. I wouldn't use these on an open fire at all, they're too flimsy.
