## Overview

The Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540T1 delivers cost-effective 10 Gigabit Ethernet performance with backward compatibility to 1 GbE networks. Supporting unified LAN, iSCSI, and FCoE traffic on a single adapter, it enables flexible I/O virtualization with up to 64 virtual ports and uses standard CAT-6a cabling with RJ45 connectors for easy deployment. Ideal for datacenters seeking high-speed, reliable, and power-efficient networking solutions.

## Description

Unified networking solutions on the Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540 let you combine the traffic of multiple data center networks like LAN and SAN onto a single efficient network fabric. You now have the choice of NFS, iSCSI, or Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) to carry both network and storage traffic at speeds of up to 10 Gbps. The Intel X540 adapter combines support for all of these traffic types in one adapter at no additional cost and with no additional licensing fees for the adapter. iSCSI uses Ethernet to carry storage traffic, extending the familiarity and simplicity of Ethernet to storage networking, without the need for SAN-specific adapters or switches. Intel Ethernet X540 is the easiest, most reliable, and most cost-effective way of connecting servers to iSCSI SANs.

Review: Genuine Intel and worked great! - Worked flawlessly. They come with both the high and low bracket. They are OEM cards so you need to download the driver directly from Intel's site. They are X8, so make sure you put them in a PCIe x8 slot. After enabling jumbo frames, and maxing out the TX/RX buffers, I was able to get about 9.83 Gbps, and copying a 35.5 GB file took 40 seconds. That means I'm getting about 1.23 Gbps out of a theoretical maximum of 1.25 Gbps, or as it so happens, 98.3% of the theoretical max speed!
Review: Low Rise Bracket Only - Pain in the anal vault. It came only with a low-rise rackmount server bracket. Had to buy these silly pieces of metal on Ebay from China which took 10 days. Other than that, yes, it works, it is fast and I am buying 12 more to complete a network.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Intel says it works on windows 7, 8 and server 2012. does it work on windows 10?**
A: It also works perfectly on Windows 11 for anyone wondering.

**Q: Is that an 8x pcie ? I see nothing in any description**
A: It's an PCI-E 8x.

**Q: Does this come with a full height bracket for desktop or low profile bracket for server installation?**
A: Mine did not - just the low profile. It's in the retail plastic container, but was shipped directly in a priority mail bubble envelope, so I couldn't even say if this is new. It didn't seem like it since it had clearly been opened (there's a space for a high profile bracket in the plastic container but it just wasn't there. Had to return it.

**Q: What does Converged indicated? Will this card operate like a regular NIC?**
A: This product 'is' a regular NIC. Intel Marketing's use of the word "converged" seems to have been selected for the product because this NIC supports 10GbE and iSCSI, FCoE, Virtualization, and Flexible Port Partitioning. I exclusively use the X540-T1 and X540-T2 cards in my servers for 10GbE connectivity to our backbone network.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Low Rise Bracket Only

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wow :)
*by J***R on November 10, 2015*

Not for the average, or even slightly more advanced user. I bought these for my home lab...overkill for sure. I first bought 1 of these and 1 of the dual port model, to verify that I would see an improvement with my equipment - why bother going to 10G if the systems you have can't leverage it? Well, safe to say - my equipment can! I was able to triple the IOPS; and using another setting within IOMeter, I could cap out at 9.8gbps! So, I bought 4 more of these, installed them in my other 4 servers, bought the Netgear 8 port 10g switch, and it's off to the races! I'd been kicking around the idea of going to 10G for a LONG time, waiting for prices to get better. While still not great, IMO, it was worth the move. Time will tell as I start putting pressure on the 10G interfaces between 5 single-port hosts and 1 dual port storage.
