It was very ambiguous but in a great way...Loved the supernatural aspect but also the look into how she was so unhappy and missing her brother...Love it.

Intriguing journey but may turn-off casual viewers

*by S***S on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 9, 2018*

Kristen Stewart is perhaps one of the most polarizing actresses in recent memory and this film does little to push opinion of her one way or the other. The concept behind this film is intriguing and the direction fluid and self-assured but this is a film that truly depends on characters to tell the story. Stewart plays the titular role who works in Paris for an aging actress desperately working through a divorce and encroaching obscurity. Stewart is seeking a sign from beyond the grave from her twin brother who dropped dead in Paris. Through the course of the film we are taken on a tense ride of supernatural and all-too-natural dangers in her course for the truth - is there life after death?Truthfully, this film will only enhance your original opinion of Stewart - if you think she is a talent-less mannequin or a master of underrated subtlety you will walk away from this film with your beliefs confirmed. The film is entertaining, mysterious, and inscrutable so if you're looking for a film with concrete answers you will be sorely disappointed. Directly Olivier Assayas creates an experience very similar to The Turn of The Screw by withholding information from the viewer and presenting an oft-times maddening middle of the road stance on the proceedings - it is wholly up to the viewer to decrypt and interpret this film.Criterion has, per usual, created a excellent release of this film. The transfer is clean, audio was clear, and the extras were a bit scanty compared to their usual plethora of commentaries and interviews. We get a single interview with the director, a liner note essay, and a press conference. In the end I would suggest this film to people with long attention spans and those who enjoy dissecting and interpreting their films. The film is rewarding but sometimes it's hard to work your way through it...

An intelligent, Existential and Psychological Ghost Story

*by A***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 13, 2018*

Thought provoking, intelligent, modern ghost story of an American in Paris passive-aggressively working as a detached personal shopper who also freelances as a spirit medium, and her longing for a paranormal sign from her deceased twin. Deliberately paced and mundane treatment of the supernatural and psychological horror creates it's ambiance of loneliness and grief, while still being able to remain creepy. The metaphors of the personal shopper and spirit medium are brilliantly utilized in the films existential themes of identity, belief, loss, guilt, alienation, and the need for communication that is missing in modern society as the characters helplessly reach out for meaning from the ennui. Excellent direction and use of European setting. Very much in the cinematic and thematic style of Michelangelo Antonioni's films with a ambiguous paranormal mystery touch that one might find in the works of David Lynch, and is highly recommended for fans of both. Also recommended is director Olivier Assayas' companion piece Clouds Of Sils Maria. A surprisingly atmospheric and haunting (some pun intended) film that easily captures the current cultural environment. The Criterion Blu ray also contains interviews and an essay.
