Ok it is plastic and the cost of the plastic is probably pennies and so the profit made is probably around 90% but this is the case with a lot of plastic products; you are basically paying for the design and you either accept that or not. It has drain holes so if moisture gets in it will drain out. I put felt washers in to protect the plastic though the screws (and wall plugs, though I used other special ones) are supplied and are fine. You can just lift it off and wash it if necessary. For me it enabled me to claw back some floor space which is important. The Plastic is robust so unless you really knock it by dropping it on a hard surface from 6 foot or whatever it should last. I noticed one reviewer had a chipped one but this is because of transit problems not the design or the thickness of the material.
