I decided I really had to stop because of the pain when I bit them too much and my thumb hurt for 2 or 3 days. The varnish dries, so the flavor takes a second or 2 to activate, but then it lingers for a good while and serves as a punishment for putting your finger in your mouth. It's not so bad that you couldn't power through it if you really want to bite your nails. But it definitely does the job of reminding you not to. I havnt bitten mine since I ordered this. It also lasts through handwashing, but obviously if you need to give your nails a good scrub you'll need to re apply it. Or if you need it to be full strength you might need to apply it 2 or 3 times a day. However, it does gradually get washed off and with us washing our hands a lot more just now then it will disappear quite quickly! But the taste does transfer when you eat finger food so I had to remove it from the nails on my right hand.
