Review: If you like a little heft in your gel pen ... - MY STORY. Part 1 - the challenge: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the normal plastic-body Pentel EnerGel RTX pens, except for 3 things, a) the weight of the pen feels just a little too light to my grip, b) the plastic barrel of the pen is prone to cracking, which c) renders the screw-on metal tip unable to stay on, as the threads of the barrel onto which the tip screws are no longer flush due to the crack in the barrel. So I keep my plastic RTX's in a protective box and use them only at my desk or bedside. But I wanted to be able to use them ANYWHERE. Part 2 - the answer: The Alloy Retractable model, available in several colors. 1) the weight of the alloy pens is much beefier and feels more substantial in my grip (could be too heavy for some folks), 2) the barrel is metal and I've had NO issues with cracking, of course, so 3) the problem with tips not staying on is rendered moot. I'm writing this review for the GOLD color one, but I have silver, red and purple as well and love them all. BONUS: This pen arrives with BLACK ink, but I can swap out whatever colors I like, as the refills are the same as for the plastic RTX EnerGel pens. What is the correct size of 'fine point', and 'medium'??? The boxes and information are contradictory at best??? **Q: What's the difference between the chrome barrel and the silver barrel, if any? one is bl407-a and the other is bl407-bp.** A: They're the same pen, but in different packaging. The "A" refers to the ink or barrel color (in Pentel's scheme, "A" is black). The "BP" refers to the packaging; "BP" pens come in bubble packs (those annoying plastic bubbles surrounded by cardboard), non-BP pens have no packaging. Usually the "BP" designation is surrounded by the barrel and ink color. For example, a violet ("V") barrel with black ink in a bubble pack has the item number BL407-VBPA; the same barrel with violet ink has the item number BL407-VBPV. If there's no "BP" and only one letter after the 407, the letter refers to the barrel color ("A"=Black; "C"=Blue; "P"=Pink; "Z"=Silver, but generally is left off, as in the BL407-A; "LS"=Aquamarine; "V"=Violet).
