Q: Does it come with a rubber boot to protect water coming into socket?

It comes with a rubber piece around the top where the bulb goes. It works very well for us. We have a sensitive GFI on that circuit and it used to trip every time it rained. Have not had a problem since we put this one out there in April.

Q: What kind of bulb did you buy for this unit? I'm assume at this price it does not come with one.

My CFLs would not work with this fixture. Their base is just too wide to fit the socket/seal without damaging the bulbs. Now I am using TCP LBR301050KND6 LED BR30 - 65 Watt Equivalent Daylight (5000K) Flood Light Bulb - 6 Pack and am having no problems. I have these pointed straight up into the trees I want to illuminate. No leaks, no blow outs, no shorts. I have about 10 of these and am getting ready to order another ten. The lamp bulbs I mentioned above are on Amazon Smile at just under $10 a pop with free shipping, about twice the price of the CFLs I was using and wasting. I've gone through a couple of hundred dollars experimenting to finally find the answer...hope you don't have to.

Yes, E26 is the common North American base. You can use A19, A15, A21 G30, G25, G16.5 PAR16, PAR20, PAR30, PAR38 BR20, BR30, BR40. I use PAR38 in my portable spike.

Q: Can I use an incandescent bulb? I want to use it under tented plants to keep them from freezing.

Yes, an incandescent bulb can be used. Be careful of closeness to objects the heat may affect.
