There is enough clearance between the TOP front edge of the dishwasher door and the bottom of the counter top to place this high quality magnet. Dishwasher manufacturers should have this item as factory installed part of each dishwasher. What a super idea. No one will EVER have to wonder what the status of the dishes are again in my kitchen. I have been using this product for probably close to a year, and I continue to be very pleased. The magnet is heavy duty and very attractive in person. It looks to me like an expensive, high quality stainless steel. The little mechanism that slides from left to right to indicate whether the dishes are clean or dirty slides quite easily each time, without causing the entire magnet to move. **Q: Does the company make a smaller less obtusive version of the dishwasher magnet?**
A: I have the same question. Nice looking, but huge!

**Q: If magnet does not stick to dishwasher are there other options to attach it?**
A: Yes, it has magnets in the back which will adhere to dishwashers made of metal.  It also comes with double sided tape if the dishwasher is of other material.

**Q: I noticed the edges are really rough on the sliding edge. Jagged and not smooth. Is that normal?**
A: Mine is not jagged at all. As a matter of fact it is too smooth. It move too easily. You could accidentally slide it one way or the other.

**Q: Are the letters raised vinyl or etched into the metal?  I actually need it to say "open" and "closed" so plan on removing the lettering. Can I?**
A: I believe the lettering is etched into the metal. There are several "Clean/Dirty" magnets on the market and you might have better luck with one of the others.

That is a super strong magnet on this sign. It is of much higher quality than I expected, it is not flimsy, and actually has a good weight to it. No need for adhesive alternate attachment method.
