(and there are many different standards all having changing similar names.. check wikipedia's articles on usb and specifically usb 3.0 both for charts to show the difference (the first chart on the main usb page isn't fully correct in regards to current naming, see the 3.0 page).. sigh. there are actually four speed standards currently under the 3.2 banner and no, 3.1 or 3.0 as those are now defunct names basically, tho still used in ads) ranging from 20Gbits/s (3.2 gen 2x2) to what was known as both 3.0, 3.1 gen 1 (advertisers will just put 3.1 but it's really 3.0 or current name 3.2 gen 1, they are all the same speed and standard, lol. sigh), and now called 3.2 gen 1x1 (shown as just gen 1 usually) at 5 Gbits/s and type C can handle them all and much more.. but some can also come in type A, B, and Micro - B connectors as well (3.2 gen 1x1 5Gbits/s, 3.2 gen 2x1 10Gbits/s) but it's the connector of the future and will be as it has a lot of future proofing like HDMI did (which is why you didn't have to change connectors to do 4k, but the cable material might of been substandard to the higher speeds due to tighter tolerances, so still needed to upgrade it but it was still the same connector and could still be used just not get the absolute sharpest of picture possible) so.. the type - c connector is going to be the standard of the future, it's just going to take some time to introduce it.. there needs to be more and more products using it.. to keep backwards compatibility and older devices functional.. it's been a long time since it was first introduced actually, the upcoming usb 4 will exclusively use the type C and give 40Gbit/s and 80Gbit/s in transfer speeds.. (as well in another confusing naming screw up, there's also a 20Gbit/s one that's the same speed as 3.2 gen 2x2.. sigh... i mean.. c'mon! tho most probably usb 4 will come to mean 40 and 80gb/s.. and it's also totally compatible with apple's thunderbolt 3 standard apparently.. apple has been forced via a court case or legislation to comply to usb c connections rather than it's proprietary lightning connector and already has USB 4 on several specific high end versions of it's devices since 2020 for added compatibility (fighting the apple monopoly to drain your wallet dry).. but also thunderbolt 4 is coming.. but will use type c I think.. it's a mess. it didn't have to be... but it is.. lol. there are so many usb connections... A, B, micro of a, b and an ab combo plus a mini version of those three. and then there's the type C... (then there's thunderbolt/lightning (very very frightening.. For context, I bought a 1TB phone specifically because of that. I may take 250-300GB of video in one weekend. MTP is far too pathetically slow method to transfer such large amounts of video from my phone to my PC, and Cloud methods are not really any better. So, for such situations I usually use a portable media device such as flash drive or external NVMe to do the transfer. Copy it from my phone to the flash drive, copy off of the drive onto my PC. Fastest method by far. I have lately been using a NVMe USB enclosure for this purpose, but due to NVMe's (relatively) high power draw, I have to use a USB dongle with power input while making the transfer. Not the end of the world but far from convenient. In the past I have experimented with other USB-C drives, but they've all been far too slow in the write department to be realistic. You may have 300MB/s of read but if your write speed is a paltry 21-22MB/s, you're as good as useless for me. This was the case for the older Samsung USB-A flash drives, and even the newer USB 3.1 gray ones. This one, by contrast, is still not amazing on writes which is to be expected for a traditional flash drive, but it is FAR better than any USB-C drives I have used in the past. On very large transfers (100+GB) it usually settles down to around 75-80MB/s within the first 30 seconds or so, and stays at that speed for the entire transfer. Doesn't get too hot (just warm) and works well. Reads are excellent so far. On Windows I'm getting around 365MB/s continuously. The only real issue with this drive is on very large reads, it will overheat. It gets quite hot on these high speed reads and after around 75-80GB, mine disconnected and stopped the transfer. Thankfully Windows seems pretty good about file management and after it sits for a while and cools down, hitting Try Again seems to work reliably. Overall very happy with this drive.
