I love true/based on true stories (whether it’s in the form of a book or a movie). This book is based on a true story. It’s sad but inspiring and eye opening. I would recommend this as a must read to educate everyone and be aware of what to look for, in order to help children whom are being abused at home. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Emotions run high *by K***R on December 26, 2016* I am at a little bit of a loss on this one. I read it start to finish in one day NOT realizing it was a somewhat fictionalized version of real events. Only after reading it cover to cover, did I realize it was "based" on true events. I do not wish to cheapen the author's experiences because the mere fact that ANY of this is even remotely true is incredibly sad to me. I know it can and does go on in millions of homes the world over, and far too many children do not get to have a voice. Or their attempts to voice their horror are brushed aside by adults or no one willing to take them at face value and help them out from under the dark cloud of abuse. And even when they do, the system seems to fail them 9 times out of 10. As a former employee of a District Attorney's Office- I can say that children's cases are FAR too often considered "unsubstantiated" and forgotten. No charges brought. It was one of the things that infuriated me the most. Children who are victims often do not have a voice in the world of grown ups and it is heartbreaking to think how many suffer at the hands of their family members or even other adults who are PAID to protect them. Very sad story, very sad situation and an eye opening (if sometimes a bit tough) read. The only downfall I can see is the main character of the story. I think I (and others) would have appreciated a more believable main character. The good at handling absolutely everything, fantastic at anything she touches, incredibly smart and careful character suddenly turned exotic dancer turned counselor might be very tough for some people to relate to. But in any event, this is an important and touching book. I can certainly see how it would be helpful for victims looking for a way out of their hell, or a way to finally speak up.
