There is also a backup key to open the safe regardless of the battery status. If so, how do you program them?** A: No it doesn't come with cards. You can use any card as long as it has a magnetic strip. I have them both stacked together for gun storage. The access code is quick and works flawlessly. The batteries never die in these safes (4 AA's) but I go ahead and change about every year just to avoid having to use the key backup. The card reader works perfectly too on either drivers license, credit cards or whatever has a magnetic strip on it. You can use either a combination or magnetic strip VERY easily when locking the safe each time. You also set the combination each time you close it so you can decide to make a change every time you lock it. Super easy and very nice functionality.
