I took the actual straw from inside the cup off and we tip it for him to drink from and he does really well with it (the lid still has a rubber straw attached, but there is a plastic straw that connects the lid to the bottom of the cup). Once he is better at using it I plan to add the straw back in and I think it will be fine. It does not leak from the lid if tipped, but if you don't get the clear rubber part on exactly right it leaks all over the place.
