    Training Guide and Orientation Tool

*by T***X on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 9, 2012*

The book is designed not only as a training guide, but also as an orientation and awareness tool. As a training guide it has logical chapter introductions that lead to numbered action steps (i.e., procedure) that correspond to appropriate locations on colored graphic screen shots. Colorization renders the screen-shot details more legible - a common challenge to books/e-books with busy black and white screen-shot pages that require a magnifying glass to render its text legible. In this book, the approach and procedures are systematically repeated in each lesson thus the reader need not self-re-orient him/herself when entering new lessons/chapters.This training procedure is further clarified with short side notes such as: `Tips,' `Try this,' `See Also' and `Cautions,' which support the reader's cautionary and critical reading. Furthermore, some chapters also list functions with relational descriptions - for example: `Templating' (page 15 - 17) reveals 19 items - that contain 5 types of possible meetings; 3 types of publishing, etc.; while `Content Types' (pages 29 - 30) have: 6 types under `Business Intelligence'; 10 types under `Document Types'; 14 under 'List Content Types', etc. With this, the reader sees relational, group and relative concepts better.Whether we use the book as a guide as we study Sharepoint on the computer, or use the book alone - for self-orientation - such documentation-administrative software (Sharepoint) sometimes challenges those who work with current management vocabulary, concepts and practices in the real world. These `practitioners' may find that in some areas Sharepoint provides its own definitions and procedures. For example, Chapter 4 - `Organizing and Managing Information' concepts such as `metadata' and `content types' require some reader/ document administrator orientation. Although this book offers good introductions expressed with easy words that are supported by lists of functional relationships, these concepts must still be mitigated with those used in the learners' real environment - such as within theory, methodology or even philosophy. The reader may thus, at times suspend `understanding' until a better contextual setting presents itself during training and then return to review this application in its new environment and definition.Christ Becket and Johnathan Lightfoot's book `Plain & Simple SharePoint 2010,' contributes and guides the learner with practical training on these and other highly meaningful SharePoint topics. Needless to say, Sharepoint can be designed for multitude environments and meet different purposes. One must read several books, see several training DVD's, attend many SharePoint Conferences, attain several Microsoft Certifications before one can begin to get the full grasp of the subject. `Plain & Simple SharePoint 2010' is among those that offers a very good star in that ultimate direction.

    Plain and simple

It is as the title suggested. Finally, someone walks the talk. I work for an organization that felt a grassroots rollout of SharePoint is the way to go. Great concept for some things but when faced with generational and technology diverse workforces this is not as great as it sounds. I started with the SharePoint for Dummies and I realized I have been demoted from a dummy. This book is great not only does it explain in the simple text but it gives screenshots (pictures) as well. I work alot within the disability community and always speak on the importance of delivering a message in several different formats and Johnathan Lightfoot and Chris Beckett get it, Really they do. The fact that the tips and screenshots are closely situated to the texts for which they write is an added bonus. It helps really to read and see the stuff and my retention rate with the information has been so surprising, I think I may change my occupation, just kidding. Love this book and it has been so helpful. Truly worth every penny and by the way is anyone in the market for a gently used SharePoint for Dummies book!

It is what it says it is...plain and simple

This book was written well. It assumed the point of view from the reader that you knew very little about SharePoint - which is true in my case. Companies are dumping content on SharePoint everywhere with almost no training for employees and even less for teaching employees knowledge management and content related solutions. This is a fair product from Microsoft. Corporate America has adopted it head on, but very few companies actually know how to leverage it. Any real training for how to best use it gets glossed over. Management thinks if you just put it out there, you are done. Aaaaggghhh!!! Has anyone ever heard about change management and technology adoption? Good book and it speaks to its name.
