Students Focus on Doing the Right Thing
Each student has a star. Twice a marking period (high school) I count "bonus points". the student with the most bonus points gets a star representing them up on the bulletin board. The board also has the Large Colored Cardboard Stars, on representing each class. The average bonus points per student in the class is written on the star so the students can see where their class stands relative to the other classes. Once a marking period the class with the highest average bonus points per class gets a pizza party. Having the stars keeps students focused on why they want to do the right thing and how close they may be to the prize. It also helps students understand that they are in control and the prize isn't awarded based on favoritism but on earned points.
