I love this pen. It has good weight, and writes very, very smoothly. If you can, try to get a notebook with high quality paper (like the Black n' Red Twin Wire Poly Cover Notebook, 8-1/4" x 5-7/8", Black/Red, 70 Ruled Sheets (C67009) ). The ink flows a bit better, and the nib won't get caught in the roughness of the paper. I did manage to get ink all over my hands the first time I installed the ink cartridge. The first one is the hardest, as the ink flows to the end via capillary action, so if there's ink there from the last cartridge, it will help pull the ink out of the new one. So, when you're doing the first cartridge, just squeeze gently in the middle after you insert it, writing with then pen as you go. You'll know when the ink is flowing. The pen also comes with a siphon, if you're interested in using an ink from a bottle. I haven't used it yet, but it looks simple enough. The ink does seem to get used up quickly, so be sure to buy some replacements to have ready. One cartridge lasts me about 3 weeks, and I don't write a ton. The Pilot cheap Standard ink , blue, blue/black, blue are not wet inks, that is they don’t flow on with over abundance, flow is smooth, bleed though resistance is good even on cheaper paper, no heavy ghosting. If you’re using cartridges then you will be using Pilot ink. I find the cartridges last a decent amount of time. You can go with the Explorer, same nibs, except it is resin a.k.a. plastic, it’s very light weight like the old celluloid 1930 pens, it can take the Pilot 70 converter which is a whopping 1 ml of ink. Personally I prefer the Explorer over the Metropolitan, the shape feels better and frankly heavy metal pens are tiring to write with over a long period, like class notes. If you go with a converter you can use other manufacture’s inks, but be warned, ink flow, ink use, water resistance, bleed through, ghosting, feathering will vary from ink to ink. Many people enjoy the discovery experience of trying different inks. If you have no interest in personalizing your fountain pen writing, either the Metropolitan or Explorer with Pilot cartridges will do you. But a converter will cut your ink cost in half. **Q: I need to know if this is a plastic pen or a metal pen for the sake of engraving** A: The Metropolitan which is an old school style torpedo like pen, it has a metal barrel and cap, the Explorer which uses the same nib, is resin aka plastic, can use the 70 converter, has a very modern style, very lightweight like the cellulite pre WW II pens. Very impressed with the quality, the comfort to hold, and how well it posts. While initially worried because my customary extra fine nib was not an option, I was extremely pleased and surprised at what the fine nib delivered... smooth ink flow with my Noodler's Inks, no scratchiness or skips, and a very nice line thickness. Plus it is one of the few fountain pens I have that is suitable in a more professional environment. Now my only "problem" is, with the caps on, I can't tell the fountain pen and the rollerball pen apart!
