There's a tiny bit of wiggle room when the slide is in. Not thinking it would handle 2-1/4" though. **Q: How do you replace the batteries?** A: Linda: The back comes off-- squeeze the sides of it, where they are indented slightly, & the back will come off; the batteries & the bulb are inside the back portion. **Q: Can 35mm negative strips be viewed?** A: No, unfortunately this viewer is for mounted slides only. **Q: Will this work with 35mm slide that have been mounted in aluminum frames with glass on each side? They are much thicker than the card board ones.** A: It should work. When I use it for the card board and the regular aluminum frames there is some extra wiggle room. Worse case senario: you pay $25 and have to return it. It works fine, and we quickly went through about 20 trays, and a lot of boxes to pick out the ones we wanted to keep (a lot of pictures of landscapes went away). I have slides that were both my dad's and my granddad's. I just want to go thru them quickly to determine what I want to keep. This was the inexpensive solution. Metal and cardboard slides can both be viewed. Works great and reasonable price (21). I bought the charger (15) but I perhaps I should have just used rechargeable batteries. I'm just getting started so maybe it was a good buy but the power cord cost almost the price of the viewer. I have some beautiful photos of the NW. Anyone know if it is possible and not cost prohibitive to have a slide enlarged (transparent not print) so I could display it with a backlight on my wall? These slides are beautiful backlit. It gives a 3D effect to the mountain scenes which I think would be lost in print. This product may not be the most sturdy product I ever purchased but it does get the job done. You don't need to buy the power adapter.
