I switched from Arnold/Minitrix/Lima/RoCo to Tomix, as the track-system is very convincing, versatile, and high quality high tech. This is not unbreakble, but an enormously sturdy track system, to which Mintrix seems fragile, and like from the stone age. I changes the track setup dozens of times, and they show no sign of quality decline. You can build circles with that tracks, and bash things with that circle in hand, and then drive trains on it again... Careful though with german legacy trains: Japanese model trains of japanese (eng english) origin have Gauge N and Simplex couplings allright, but they are not 1:160, but 1:150 (1:148 english), so buildings and trains/waggons might seem a bit "smaller". More important, the tracks are tailor-suit for wheels of 5mm diameter, while the "classic" (german) wheels are 5,8mm to 6,5mm. This will cause many (albeit not all) older trains and waggons to cant to a small degree when crossing japanese turnouts (esp. double-cross of the "H"-Type), which, at best, will result in a "rumbling" sound, but, unfortunately, sometimes in the loss of power. They will then come to a sudden full stop in the middle of the turnout. A good candidate for that is the VT98 Schienenbus (unless some very new models that use the VB or VS as secondary power-input, which solves the issue reliably). For the same reason, conversely, some japanese trains derail in old german turnous, esp. the dreaded Minitrix "Bogenweichen" (but that happens to many trains, to be honest). The Tomix "Bogenweichen", contrarily, are very reliable, and can be highly recommended. So, if you have some older trains you love and want to keep, you are well-advised to test-drive them on Tomix H-turnouts, if possible, or at least visit forums and ask on what to expect. While it is possible to re-fit simple waggons with smaller wheels, it is very difficult, and sometimes impossible, with locomotives. Another fair warning has to be given about the famous japanes "mini-radius". These tracks are made for trams, not for long locomotives, and go below what is called "R1" (the smallest radius) in german tracks, which is r190, down to r103 (which is radius 103mm). While some ordinary locomives can ride them, many cannot, and will either get stuck, or even derails. On the other hand, the japanese tram (and bus-) systems provide great fun in tight urban spaces, and provide a complete new hobby in modern environments, which are not locked in german slighly post-Nazi german Kitsch of 1950, to which the german stuff seems to be stuck in forever. Just my very personal opinion...
