Map Skills for Today: Grade 1: Finding Your Way

This should be a lot of fun to do and a good introduction to map reading for first graders.

I am helping homeschool my grandson. He has made it about halfway through this map skills book. The material covered and quality of the paper is good. This is a very colorful book, that is where I have a problem, it is darker than even many markers. Many of the exercises require him to mark on the maps. The coloring is so dark, I can’t tell where he has been or going. I won’t be ordering anymore in this series, I am switching to a different brand lighter in color.

We bought 1st and 2nd grade levels and my child LOVES this workbook! We do at least 4-6 pages a day. Very colorful & engaging. Will definitely be purchasing more & have already recommended them to others.

The reading level is about right for a first grader (nowadays), but not an emergent reader as it would be too hard for him/her. The activities are fine (drawing maps, answering questions, marking maps). The text is constructed around a bear character named Buddy, who addresses the reader in the form of letters. It’s cute, but not great. My kiddo started with learning from an atlas and songs about the continents and seas. This book helps with basic map concepts like compass directions and map keys.

The book is great for introductory map skills. It is colorful and my homeschooler likes it. (And, he is pretty picky.)

The order of things in this book doesn't seem to make logical sense to my (young) first grader. Maybe she just isn't quite ready for maps/distance but I'm not loving this book. Doesn't seem intuitive.

Great for a 6 year old. Finished a book in one day.
