![Red Sparrow [4K Ultra-HD + Blu-ray] [2018]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/41V2NEIqhsL.jpg)

Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton star in this thriller based on the novel by Jason Matthews. Russian agent Dominika Egorova (Lawrence) was forced to enrol at Sparrow School, where she and many other agents were taught to use their bodies to seduce and deceive their enemy. Now one of the best in the business, Dominika is assigned her latest victim: CIA officer Nate Nash (Edgerton). Review: One of the best films lately - Exceptional acting and direction Review: Great film for any day of the week. - I am surprised that there any any negative reviews about this film. It is not to be compared with spy movies such as Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy or Bridge of Spies. Red Sparrow follows the gripping story of a ballerina girl who suffers a serious injury and ends up training as a spy, working for her nefarious uncle. The film boasts continuous action, intrigue and twists leaving you on the end of your seat. Thankfully, the movie is easy to follow, but make sure you prepare your pot of tea or open your bottle of wine beforehand, as you are not going to want to stop or pause this film. Good acting generally, and nice to see Jeremy Irons making a contribution. Above all, the film presents a chilling and frightening rendition of what some of communist Russia may have been like...

Good, sexy spy thriller
Good spy thriller, reminds me of Luc Besson's 'Anna' and 'Nikita'. Beware, there are some saucy scenes, and it's quite violent for a 15 cert. There's also some sexual violence, but it is handled well. The plot gets a tad confusing in places. Jennifer Lawrence is great, but not sure about the male lead. Comes across a bit weak... Interesting orchestral score to the movie.

SUPERIOR ESPIONAGE TALE (4K UPGRADE ENHANCES VIEWING EXPERIENCE)
The picture quality on the 4k format is noticeably more vibrant than its Blu-ray showing, though I am of a mind, as a fan of 4k that upgrades for special-effect movies are more beneficial in truth. Taking nothing away from this superb double-agent/loyal citizen? offering which is in my opinion right up there with the best such as Angelina Jolie's 'SALT' Below my original review - The film has received mixed reviews from the critics since its release earlier in 2018,, I had heard very little about the film but noticed one or two encouraging comments on the review pages so I took a chance on it. A mesmerizing performance from Jennifer Lawrence who plays Dominika Egorova a prominent Russian ballerina whose career is ended after a freak accident on stage. Dominika after a period of recovery is approached by her uncle who offers her the unpleasant task of seducing a Russian gangster in exchange for her sick mother's continued medical care, Dominika has little choice but to carry out her uncles' direction, her mothers care being her priority. When events turn nasty Dominika will be given a choice of death or being enlisted into the intelligence agency known as Sparrows where she will be trained to seduce her targets and or kill. Dominika successfully completes her training and is assigned to try and identify a Russian-mole by befriending C.I.A agent Nate Nash played by Joel Edgerton. However things seem a bit complex when Nate is instructed to try and recruit Dominika as a double-agent....will there be a genuine romance between the two? Will Dominika betray her country or remain focused on the task? A tense and absorbing story that includes several brutal sequences some of which are indeed moments that some may find uncomfortable to watch. (Torture) I would say I myself found it well worthy of a viewing.

Pretty good, but deviates from the book too much for me
I read the book before buying so I could watch this Blu-ray without getting lost (if other reviews are to be believed). Well, here's my short review of the Blu-ray. First, Jennifer Lawrence. I enjoyed her performance. I'm not much of an expert on acting but she obviously worked hard and managed to carry off the lead. Why some reviewers struck the knife in I don't know. OK, so there are moments where logic/reality is stretched a bit, but this is a film designed for entertainment, it's not a documentary. Second, the deviations from the book. Some I can understand (I watched all the extras afterwards), but some, well, they just grated. If I hadn't read the book (and yes, I know sacrifices have to be made to get a 540+ page paperback into a 2:20 film) I would have been happy, but whole swathes of the book's plot are changed. A good thing is the lack of fixating on recipes that the book had - I skipped them anyway. Third, visuals. On the whole, well done. Although I'm glad I didn't watch the short documentary on the visual look of the film before I watched the film - it might have put me off a bit. Budapest looks great, and some of the interiors are very effective. Fourth, the music score. Yes, it was a bit cloying, even too lush and scene-stealing, at times, but it suited the film. This is Hungary and Russia, not some modern dance floor, so a classical score was the correct choice. Fifth, the disc itself. A slow loader, but that could just be my Panasonic player (three years old). Extras OK, but I always appreciate a good Gag Reel, sadly none here. Dolby Atmos, even though I don't have the set-up to handle it, is always a bonus on a standard Blu-ray (i.e. not confined to the 4K disc releases), so a tick from me on that. Also the extras seemed to consist (at times) of saying how wonderful this person or that person was - a mutual back-slapping fest! More talk about the film and less about your mates please...! So why the three stars? Well, simply the deviations from the book annoyed me (especially Sparrow School (too much lopped out) and Swan's story being changed), as did the luvvie extras (but there was good information in there as well). If there is a sequel (I'm currently reading it as my bedtime book) then will it follow the book or this film? I, for one, hope there is.

As a preface, this is not the only JenLaw movie to get unnecessarily slammed by sham reviews. Since The Fappening, people have been on a mission to smear her image. (The personal comments about the president haven't helped.) But throw all that out, look at this film objectively, and you will be pleasantly rewarded with a spy thriller that's cunning, sexy and disturbing all at once. Lawrence plays a Soviet op who is conned into a femme fatale lifestyle of cutthroat operatives when her ballerina career is ruined from an injury. She crosses paths with Edgerton, an agent in the middle of a career SNAFU, as he attempts to redeem his status with the CIA after getting made during his cover. Romance and espionage ensues. The movie is one part Lawrence learning to survive covertly and two parts not trying to turn on her government to aid her mother, friend, and colleagues. The crux of why people are turning this down is the violence and graphic nudity. The violence is no worse than Fight Club and about as disturbing as Black Swan. Those are your benchmarks. As for the sexuality... yes you get to see a penis, some breasts and butt, but at this point you should know Jen is human. Body parts do not make the actor. The acting makes the actor. Lawrence does a pretty convincing job pulling off a Russian dialect, but it's being sociopathic while undercover where she shines. It's a tale of espionage. She starts off scared and green, but over the course of 2 hours she is brutally beautiful in her façade. Edgerton is handsome and sweet. He is excellent as a supporting actor and he only makes Jennifer that much more focal in the story. One of the other standouts here is Rampling, the stoic mission driven school commandant who effortlessly instills guile in her students through psychosexual manipulation. She is equal parts mechanical and overtly invasive in finding sexual quirks. There's another standout performance in Red Sparrow, but I promised I wouldn't spoil the movie in my review. I'm sorry I'm late with this review, but if you plan on Redboxing the movie or catching it before the theatrical run ends, do so! It is not a first date movie, but is definitely sensual, very engrossing and yet another star for both Lawrences' track records. I hope these two continue to work together for years to come.

First I was a bit disappointed when I noticed this is not an action movie like Atomic Blonde but this is so much better it's a very colorless and very true look and what spies go through and a great look at what surely goes on all over the world. I live in Vienna (which is ffeatured in this film and the got everything right.. A rare thing. Usually the go to the east, it's cheaper) but anyway. Vienna was always a big deal for spies. But this is a verv harsh film. Don't watch it if you can't stand violence or missing empathy. It is a very truthful look and very entertaining. Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic. Even though I don't like her that much as a person anymore but fantastic actress and fatastic movie. This is a Blu Ray to buy and own for sure.
